Freestyle Libre malfunction

Hi all,

There’s this thing that has been bothering me for a long time which is the constant malfunction of the Libre, has anyone experienced this?

When it works it is great and is usually within +/- 0.5 mmol/L of the BG on my meter but often times it doesn’t work.

I’d say so far only 2 out of 6 sensors have been accurate enough ( I don’t mind an error up to 1mmol/L but it is way larger than this) and almost always when there are 4-5 days till it expires it totally goes haywire showing me have hypos for hours and hours and even days. I’ve seen the difference be as large as -4 mmol/L

Everyone else seems to be okay with it but I don’t know if it’s my body rejecting it or what. I know most people report a minor inaccuracy but this isn’t minor. I’m inserting it correctly and seem to be fine in the first 6-7 days but after that it slowly goes less accurate until the last 4-5 days when it goes bonkers.

Because of this everyday I contemplate why I’m self-funding these when most of the time they fail.

Any tips on how to prolong its life? I don’t know what’s wrong. I see on YouTube that people put it in alternative places and still their sensor is fine but I put it exactly where the company says it to and yet it fails.

Is the Dexcom any better? The sensors are changed every 10 days I believe so less likely to go bonkers. I know it’s more expensive but what can I do— don’t want to ruin my fingers since as a diabetic our bodies heal slower than normal people anyways

Hi,

You're currently on holiday in a hot country? Are you staying hydrated enough..

Regarding the wound healing? I've never had these issues, especially when my BGs are OK. ;)
(I've lost a fight with an angle grinder. & dropped a bayonet through my foot. plus a couple of washing up accidents with broken glass?)

Yeah I’m in a hot country and drinking plenty. Had to remove a sensor 4 days early because the app prompted me to. Inserted new one, it bled and then it didn’t stick, put tape around it and the tape it coming out. The sensor is literally floating on my arm about to fall off. Only brought 100 test strips because I was relying on bringing 3 sensors and 25 days left so I would have to check my BG only 4 times a day I guess. I have an unopened sensor but don’t want to risk another malfunction.

I know they give free replacements and I’ve previously asked for 2 but I wish they didn’t fail. Usually I don’t really have a problem with it sticking, I’m about 100% sure it’s due to the heat and my skin constantly sweating but the accuracy bit is the annoying thing.

You’ve been doing diabetes for ages so you probably have good control, my control has been pretty poor but my HbA1c is superficially 6% because of all the Libre inaccuracies and my consultant was thinking I’m doing so well apart from the frequent hypos, they’re in for a shock when they order an actual A1c test. I still have a mark on the back of my hand where it was cut accidentally 3 months ago before starting insulin, the wound has healed but you can still see a dark mark even though it has been ages and it was only a small cut

OK? firstly it looks to me like you placed the sensor on a hairy part of the skin? I place mine under the arm. less hair. (don't be afraid to use a razor on any strays.)
I normally put a new one on after a shower, exfoliating the area to be placed, then when dry clean the area with the supplied alcohol wipe..
One thought. Being teenager yourself. could it be the hormonal oily skin thing exacerbated by the heat???

Whilst I appreciate your frustration with non-sticking sensors, if you have another, then in your shoes, I would use it. I would also email Abbott and explain what is happening, so that they will not be dumbfounded when you call on your return.

Thing is, you have a sensor. If you don't apply it, you can be assured of zero benefit from it. If you apply it, and get a week from it, then you have 50% benefit. OK. I totally accept that is extremely simplistic, but do you see the sentiment?

A number of people have reported bleeding through sensors in the past, although I haven't experienced that myself. I usually find sensors stick like limpets!

Relating to your scar; it looks a perfectly normal scar to me. The skin in the backs of our hands is quite thin, so can be prone to more scarring than some other areas, and of course, they're often exposed to the sun, wherever we are. I know I have a couple of scars that are near invisible, but when I have a suntan, they show up.

You dropped a Bayonet through your foot!! . Jeez, how did THAT happen?

It was a different time back then (In "the olden days.") when i was a kid. my parent's place had a few bits of objedar?
I found this old ornate blunt bayonet possibly from WW1?
Thought i was "King Arthur" (Like you do.) & started swinging it like a "pro" then lost grip.. :banghead:

I started the sensors back in March just before lockdown when I requested it due to my job and my cycling.

I'd never had any issues on the first 5-6 sensors but then I had 3 out of 4 bad ones.
1 just didn't last more than a day
1 the sensor wouldn't pick up that it was attached after the hour you load it
1 was like yours where it just told you figures well under what you were, I was in hypo mode constantly so just changed the sensor

When you change it just make sure your skin is clean and dry, take off any creams etc you might have on. Iv luckily not had any issues with them coming off but you might want to get a full strap to hold it down
