Hi, I was recently told that I had type 2. No medication yet, trying with diet to reduce levels. Due to covid, I have been unable to get to my surgery so bought a home test kit. My sugar level read 10.2, this was 2 hours after my dinner this evening. Is this still classed as type2 or prediabetes.
Thanks in advance

Thay is rather high. You should test before you eat and 2 hours after you eat. Have a look in my signature for hints on food, ask all the questions you want, and welcome to the forum.

As said that's quite high
What did you eat for dinner?

Hi, I had a bowl of broccoli and Stilton soup with a wholemeal chicken salad sandwich

Not being on meds and recent diagnosis you could be running high anyway, you need to know what you were prior to eating. A single measurement after food doesn't show its impact

That said, Was that soup from a carton/can or homemade?
The soup could easily have 30g+ of carbs
If you had, say, 2 pieces of bread as sandwich then that's 24g+

So for some people, that many carbs can easily spike their sugars and leave them high for a while (quite a few on the forums have less than that daily). Others have less impact. Totally depends on the person

Morning,
The soup was homemade, broccoli, cauliflower, edamene beans, and stilton with stock.
Will have it again for lunch today but without the bread.
Still reading loads of info but it can be a bit bewildering.
Last blood results, I was told were "53", again this confuses me as my home test reads mmol
Thanks again for your reply, it is appreciated

Have a look at: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-to-blood-sugar-level-converter.html

There are other calculators on this site to convert. Yes it's oberwhelming but you're on the right site

Not sure what the carbs are like in the beans, but the soup soinds not bad to me, but I'm not a good cook so not sure! Others I am sure will know better

Hi there, you will need to get the exact figures from your Drs but I would think that the '53' blood test is an Hb1ac test that they do which looks at your glucose levels over the last 3 months and comes up with an average, they use it to diagnose. It is totally different to your finger prick tests at home, each time you do one it is showing what your current glucose level is, ie your 10.4. For now I would suggest you continue to do a test before meals and then 2 hours after as a starting point, that way you will see what certain food does to your levels. Others will be along soon to advise in more details but I'm guessing it's the bread that raises you (wholemeal/white - no difference really as carbs are carbs).
