Diabetes and coronavirus

Hi I have type 1 diabetes, and it's a but out of control at the moment, I work in social care, I was told by a doctor that I am at no more risk of catching covid that a non diabetic person but if I do it will be more serious, this has made me think should I not be shielding? It makes me mad that we are obviously high risk but it's not recognised

Age is more important than diabetes:-
"There is good evidence that certain underlying health conditions increase the risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. When compared to persons without underlying health conditions, the absolute increased risk in those with underlying health conditions is considered generally to be lower than the increased risk in persons over the age of 65 years (with the exception of the clinically extremely vulnerable" https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...ups-for-covid-19-vaccination-30-december-2020

That's a maybe but it's still a risk, plus I have my children at home off school until who knows when, it makes no sense for me, the person who has diabetes to have to work when they are at home, anyway fingers crossed it stays away

@Elaine2910 Do you work in the public sector? If yes you may wish to explore this tool and discuss with your HR department. It may also help a discussion if your employer is private. My understanding is that your doctor is correct - as a Type 1 you are not at more risk of being infected, but if you do catch COVID-19, you MAY be at higher risk of more severe impact. For both Type 1s and Type 2s this is strongly influenced by BG control - the higher BG levels then potentially worse impact. Probably the best thing you can do for yourself is to aim to get your BG control back on track. Take care.
