Hi, I'm after some advice please. I'm checking my bloods before bed - last night it was 8.8 so I took some insulin to bring it down as I know in the morning it goes up. I got up this morning and it was 12, so I thought I'd go for a walk, came back and check my bloods - this was about an hour later and it had gone up to 13.5. I didn't have anything to eat or drink. I'm trying my hardest to get my bloods under control but I feel like giving up with it al

Hi there

No experience of insulin, so can’t help with that, but with the walking is that something you do regularly? Did you go quicker or further than usual?

Some people find that exercise, especially strenuous exercise, can temporarily put blood sugars up, but then they come down pretty quickly afterwards and longer term exercise will be good for blood sugars.

For me a gentle walk tends to send my numbers down, whereas something much quicker/longer might put them up.

What happened once you sat down after getting home?

Welcome to the forum.

I'm just on diet and exercise and still supply my own insulin (just) but my BG climbs more or less from midnight to noon.
Exercise in the morning boosts my BG even higher.
It starts to come down rapidly after noon, usually.

I have noted that what I ate the previous day can have a major effect, with the results of some meals carrying over well into the next day.

I would talk to your health care team about doses because if your results are consistent over many days you may need to modify the timing and amount of insulin.

Also, look around this forum for information on how to lower your carbohydrate load and perhaps ease your requirement for insulin.

Hi and welcome,

I agree with both @Goonergal and @LittleGreyCat that exercise in the morning can temporarily put your levels up. I also do a gentle walk- not quick but for about an hour and that keeps my levels stable and they come down after that.

Good luck and welcome.
