Hi
This is my first post. Had appointment for a pre assessment for an operation and did the finger prick test. Blood sugar came up as 22.6. I am told this is too high. They have taken a blood test too, I don’t have the results yet. I have an operation booked for a week and a half time. Hoping they will still operate, Have GP doing a telephone consultation next week to discuss what can be done. Does anyone have any idea what can be done in a short space of time?
Many thanks

Hi and welcome @Jo120!
I think it best to wait until you have the blood test results, before offering advice. So sorry you are having this anxious time before surgery. Have you any other symptoms? Is it possible that you could have had something on your finger that would have given a false result? Did you wash hands immediately before the finger pricking?
Please report back when you have the full results of blood test, and I am sure you will get plenty of helpful info and advice from members.

I would advise you to prepare yourself for postponement of the surgery.
It is generally considered unwise to perform elective surgery on someone who has uncontrolled/undiagnosed high blood sugars. Your blood test will shed light on the issue - the rise could have been due to current stress for instance, but 22 is high…
High blood sugars retard wound healing and increase possibility of infection.

Hello and welcome,

I am sorry you have found yourself in this situation. Once you have the blood tests back let us know your results.

Good luck
