Hi guys,

I've been Type 1 for just over 2 years now and I've been injecting Humalog and Abasaglar since diagnosis. Recently though, whenever I inject, I get a small painful lump at the injection site which goes down quickly but turns into a bruise after. The injection itself often stings now too, to the point I have to pull the needle out immediately.

I'm using the 4mm needles I've also used since diagnosis.

I tried Dr Google but everything says Lipohypertrophy which I don't think is it.

TIA x

You might try applying some pressure to the injection site with your finger for a short period of time after the injection and see if that helps.

Some people become allergic to their insulin.
If you are only experiencing this for one type of your insulin, it may be useful to ask if you could try an alternative. For example, change your Humalog to NovoRapid.

Thank you, it is the Humalog. I will see if I can get an appointment, not holding my breath though

Hi @TIGERLILY1991, Just a thought and apologies if I'm wrong, could it be you're not using a new needle every single time? When I can't be bothered and use the same needle for a day...or more....it always causes that small lump you mention followed by a little bruise. If you do change it every single time, I find that sort of resting it on the skin rather than pushing it in, and then allowing it to sink slowly in works a treat.

Hi I have been type 1 for 3 years and have just had exactly the same problem. My nurse had seen this before and has solved it by switching me to silicone coated and longer needles, longer will mean less chance of bruising and she thought it a reaction to the needle rather than the insulin hence the silicone coated ones. It was effecting me badly as sometimes it was as if I hadn’t even taken the insulin, I had so many bruises it was hard to find a gap to inject.
It’s worked. I now use Microdot droplet pen needles 8mm They also do 6mm. I can take a photo of the box if it helps.

I can be lazy changing the needles so I'll give this a go too, thank you! X

It's more my Humalog so I don't think it's the needles. Thank you though, I'm glad they have sorted it for you. Also good to know they offer these, I had no idea x

Me too; I have been using Humalog needles for almost 4 years on my upper thighs and I think I get little inner lumps, and maybe even a cause for a fall I had. I have switched to sides of legs, abdomen, and arm and I think I have given my usual area a rest, but I am not sure I can distinguish between the causes of a "traumatic knee injury" and thigh/stomach hematoma with nerve pain. In either case, the tiny lump feeling on thighs is gradually going away now.... gradually.
