Hi,

I've recently had a few pre-hypo alarms at night and had to snack (was diagnosed two months ago so this is all quite new).
I was just wondering if anyone has any overnight snack recommendations to quickly raise BG and keep it up for the rest of the night? And preferably to not feel like I'm ruining my teeth.
So far I've been having a small handful of raisins and a biscuit or two.
I think I also need to start keeping food in my bedside table as roaming the kitchen in the dark is unpleasant especially at this time of year!

Thank you!

I am not concerned about "ruining my teeth" by treating a hypo at night.
We are happy to eat without cleaning our teeth during the day and don't lose them.
If you are concerned, you could drink some water after your hypo treatment at night.

Keeping your hypo treatment next to your bed is important - as you say, you don't want to roam around in the dark when unstable due to a hypo.

You're completely right, of course the priority is the hypo treatment. I think I have some weird block where after I've brushed my teeth it feels like a reset and I shouldn't eat for as long as possible! But that's just me being silly and I appreciate you calling that out, thank you

I am not a type 1 but I quite like peanut butter smeared on apple slices. Not sure how that would work for you as a type 1 but I prepare it during the day and keep it in the fridge.

It has not ruined my teeth - yet

I am not type 1 but I think some of the type 1s eat jelly babies for this but sorry I don't know how many to take at a time? and I think they also have full sugar cola for the same reason - some of the Type 1s could may be help you out with how much to take?

Hi,

You could try drinking milk after the initial hypo & fast carb treatment, to hopefully stop any recurrence?
defiantly keep something by the bed. I notice from your profile you live in Berlin? What's the fastest hitting quick & easy consumed sweet in your part of the world?
Lol, yep it can be trippy padding about dazed & confused waking from a hypo. I was brought up as a kid in a spooky 300'odd year old cottage? Twighlight zone finding the kitchen as an 8 year old..

Thank you Jaylee!
Yes unfortunately we don't have jelly babies here, though I'm hoping to visit my family in the UK at Christmas so will stock up! Otherwise various haribo and other sweets are available.
Thanks for the milk suggestion, I was wondering what a good longer-acting carb would be for overnight.

Wow that sounds terrifying for an 8-year-old!

Hi,

Those Haribo sour jobbies work for me.. Coke can help? (Just don't chase the Coke with the milk.)

As a kid I was on porcine insulin too. I automatically woke headed down stairs & raided the kitchen.
I was given a book when diagnosed. I remember it well. (Sort of Janet & John have diabetes? The girl always had a pat on the head from the doc. The lad was always getting into jolly scrapes. Like running out to play without eating..) "If you feel funny, tell mummy.."
No time for that. No meter's back then, either. They just hit you hard.

Hi, I have three jelly babies that takes approximately 15 minutes to bump me up but I fall back almost as fast, I eat a two finger KitKat, I hate the jelly babies as too sweet but the KitKat is yummy. The difficult part is not eating ten kitkats as I’m like the Cookie Monster when hypo, I lost 90 minutes from the bed to the kitchen one night lol, no idea what I was doing but it’s not a long walk normally :)

Definitely keep your hypo treatment in a bedside cabinet. Walking down stairs can be very tricky when hypo!

I’ve the same problem especially after I exercise in the day.

I’ve been recommended protein shakes woth added coconut fat - as that is the longest lasting foods. Not tried it yet as only just ordered.
