Loosing my hair

Have you had Covid in the last few months? I lost alot of hair after covid. It took a year to recover.

I also lost alot after the birth of my 2nd child.

Are you taking metformin? If so, have you had your B12 levels checked?

Typical Type 1 diabetes (and its treatment) does not cause hair loss.
I recommend making an appointment to discuss this with your GP as it may indicate something serious or something that can be treated easily.

Unfortunately, autoimmune conditions can be “sociable” - if you get one, like Type 1 diabetes, you may be more susceptible to others such as coeliac, Reynauds and alopecia. It is definitely worth getting checked out.

thanks I will definitely speak to my gp abut this

i have recently just waiting for the result
When you get the results check that this included ferritin not just serum iron or haemoglobin. Many drs only looked for anaemia (hb levels) rather than iron deficiency/stores (ferritin) and also have ridiculously low minimum lab reference levels for it. Ask for the numbers, units and reference ranges not just “normal” and look it up yourself too. For ALL blood tests.

I have had my blood test done for my anaemia levels and i have heard nothing back from the doctors so I don't believe it can be a anaemia issue my hair is still falling out

My hair started to fall out gradually about seven months ago. When the GP agreed to see me, she said it is alopecia, and that nothing can be done about it.

Had diabetes over 40 years found out about 4 years ago could only grow half a goatee plus one of my eyebrows disappeared ,
( not a good look lol) went to docs told me I had alopecia (partial) I can grow a full head of hair btw , he told me I had one auto immune disease so not surprised if I had another ! I have since grown my eyebrow back and can grow a full goatee so don’t really know the cause, my theory now from a male perspective of course is a bald head never goes out of fashion

This is just not the case. Many if not most drs are undereducated about the effects of low ferritin. They are taught so long as you have sufficient hb levels all is good. This simply is not true. Any group of low ferretin (iron deficiency without anemia) groups will show you that we get a vast array of symptoms long before anaemia sets in. Also lack of contact from a dr means lack of contact, not a confirmation that all is ok. Follow is up and get your numbers. Ferretin in the U.K. is classed as ok so long as it’s above 11. In reality most medical organisations class below 30 as absolute iron deficiency (even NICE) and below 70 is recognised as causing symptoms.

Now your issue may or may not be iron related but please don’t just accept a “normal” hb level as proof that it’s not.

Hair can fall out for many different reasons. For example, if you don't take enough care of your hair, its roots become weaker, which causes it to fall out.

Are you particularly stressed at the moment? Whenever I get incredibly stressed, worn out and "down" in mood, I get hair loss. Sometimes I don't realise how much things are affecting me until I realise my hair is falling out. It gives me a nudge to do something about the cause of stress but is quite stressful in itself!

I would suggest speaking to your GP if you haven't already and they'll be able to help with appropriate tests etc.

I am a hairdresser and there can be numerous reasons for hair loss genetics, menopause creates havoc on the hair as estrogen/progesterone drop it causes androgens to kick in making the hair follicles shrink leading to hair loss, poor diet, stress -that's the first thing to fall out for me my hair! Incidentally my folic levels were/are way too high and I was getting brittle nails, skin peeling and my hair was getting really dry and shedding. For your gp to say nothing can be done for hair loss is disgusting. There are treatments available light therapy, Indian head massages help stimulate the scalp or even laser treatment. Is your hair over processed as that could be a factor as I could be breakage. Have you had a baby recently, where is it falling out just in one particular place or all over?
