Type 1 What is a normal post-meal blood sugar spike for MDI?

I have finally been given a Libre 2, and one of the main things that I'm noticing is just how much my blood sugar spikes following a meal. Over my first few days it hasn't been unusual for my blood sugar to reach 18-20 in the first couple of hours after eating. I don't believe the meals I've had have been particularly sugary.

I'm on MDI, and use Novo Rapid before meals - typically 5-10 minutes before eating, but this is going to be the first thing that I try adjusting to reduce the spikes. Presumably I have always spiked like this, and am only now seeing it that I'm using a CGM, and my HbA1c has always been relatively good, so I'm not overly concerned, but would like to fix this if I can.

I was hoping to hear from some others on MDI what a typical blood sugar spike looks like after a meal, so that I know what I should be aiming for.

Thanks!

I recall this issue when I first got a Libre a few years ago now. For me it is all about the timing of the insulin injection. For example, in the morning, my body takes ages to start absorbing the insulin injection and sometimes I need to wait an hour before eating if I am to avoid the spike. Later on in the day that time gap reduces as my metabolism starts speeding up!
So what I do (especially in the morning) is take my injection and wait until I begin to see the blood glucose level start to reduce on the Libre (lots of scans required)! Then and only then do I have my food. Of course the risk is that I wait too long but, with practice, that is rare these days and anyway the low level alarm on the libre reminds me if I really screw up. This and a few other tricks definitely work. Today my Time in Range is 95% - (range being 4 - 10 mmol/l).
Hope this helps

Thank you, that is super helpful, and good to know! Sounds like I just need to experiment (carefully) a bit, which I was expecting, to be honest!
