Newbe with type 2

Hi all ,I was diagnosed with type 2 10 weeks after feeling rubbish for about 6 weeks previously,
It kind of came as a shock if I'm honest, I'm 51 but I'd class myself as relatively fit for my age, I still play football/golf and my diet wasn't terrible.
Diabetes is in my family and I know first hand how awful it can get, my dad was type 1,he had both legs amputated over a period of about 5 years, it was devastating as a family to see him go from this big guy to a shell of a man, sadly he died of complications due to diabetes 3 years ago.
At the moment I'm trying to manage it through my diet, obviously I'm doing all I can not to end up like my dad !

Hello, and welcome @Eagles777. Although this is a club we didn’t really want to join, we find ourselves here, and try to help each other out.
When you mention your diet wasn’t terrible, and you are trying to manage your T2 diabetes through diet, do you need any advice regarding that? What were you eating before, and what changes have you made?

HI, Yes its not a club i was hoping to join :) my diet was a mixture of good and bad, lots of veg and chicken but also being half Italian loads of pasta and red meat.
I do have a sweet tooth or did have a sweet tooth which obviously didn't help, I'm not over weight but things slow down when you hit 50 plus.
I've been cutting out lots of sugar and carbs but have been finding it difficult, I feel hungry all of the time even though I'm actually eating more, my wife is helping me massively also which has been a great help.

Cutting out sugar, and carbs ( all carbs break down to sugar on digestion, even the so called ‘healthier’ types often recommended) is a good start.
In doing so you need to increase the other diet macros, protein and fats. I know that sounds odd, after having for decades been told that fat is the enemy. It needn’t be. There are some good examples of what members eat in the low carb diet forum. Many manage without medication.

If you haven't already got a meter I highly recommend that you get one. A meter is the tool that will let you know what effect different foods have on your blood sugar levels.

I completely agreet that with diet changes many here can manage without medication. However, in my view the important thing is to manage your blood sugar levels in whatever way you can. I started taking Metformin and that helped me at the beginning. I no longer take it but would have no problem starting again if needed.

It's great that your wife is helping. My husband is also very supportive and fully on board with my low carb diet. That has made it a lot easier for me. Prior to my diagnosis I certainly ate a lot of carbs. Most of them were 'healthy' carbs but carbs nevertheless.
