Husband been doing ok, has got his readings down from 10-12 to high 7s. But today he had an 8.8 . He had supper of 4 small slices of LC bread with cheese then 5 cherries + some blueberries (frozen fruit) in double cream.

has he had those foods before? Even low carb bread often isn’t actually low, more less bad than typical bread. Cherries and blueberries aren’t carb free and can add up quickly if a lot are consumed.

Or it might be nothing to do with the food and either a random “off” reading as meters aren’t precise and have tolerance levels. The difference between high 7 and 8.8 isn’t that great given the variation that’s considered acceptable. Or he could be a bit more tired, a little more stressed, have a minor bug he’s busy fighting off (even under the radar).

Well that's true, he is tired today. Thanks HSSS, maybe next time try 2 slices of the bread and no fruit. get a better idea that way.

When I first got my glucose meter I was trying all sorts of foods to see what spiked, the worse spike I had was after eating just 5 cherries, can't remember now how high my BG went, but nothing has been close to that spike since.

Cherries are a no no for me too and I love them, fruit is the thing I miss most out of everything I don’t eat anymore, cherries for me are as bad as grapes. Also although we say here stick to berries blueberries are quite carby and the highest in carbs of berries

Here’s a link to the diet doctor site guide to fruits you may find helpful

There is a frequently quoted article that describes the 42 things that can affect our blood sugars. What we eat is only one of them.
Other things include weather, stress, exercise, alcohol, illness, drugs, … and more.
This is why it is recommended to look for trends rather than a single higher/lower reading.

I find cherries, apricots etc spike me if I eat them alone, but a few as part of a larger meal with either double cream or yoghurt only raises me a little.
Grapes on the hand are like sugar bombs

Wow, I didn't know that!

I can'r always claim for one-off readings, but I do know that most of my slightly higher HbA1c results defintely corresdpond with various non food related issues,

He does seem to be settling back into the high 7s/low 8s again so this must be what's happened. THANKS EVERYBODY! :)
That's good to know. Thanks for updating us.

When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, whilst in hospital some 20 years ago, I was strongly advised to avoid grapes and cherries in particular, because of their sugar content.

We're all different but, for what it's worth, I can get away with rounding off lunch with a few raspberries, blackberries or blackcurrants every once in a while.

Got frozen rasps and blueberries added to the Sainsbugs order for this week. Will give him a handful every day with his yoghurt and cream.
