I'm having an MRI of my duff pancreas next month and he info they've sent me has me wondering how I'm going to manage things. They want a total fast for 6 hours before the MRI (no food or drink at all) and to bring 600ml of pure pineapple juice with me. I'm concerned about my blood sugar being high enough to drive to the appointment so my have to stop my basal insulin until after the test. I'm also concerned as that much pineapple juice is about 80g of carbs and I've never tried to balance that amount of carb intake before as I'm relatively new to all this having only been diagnosed in February and only confirmed as T3c in the last month. I tend to trend higher (regularly 6-7 first thing in the morning) so a bit concerned about just how high this would push me. I've been in DKA once (how I was diagnosed) and definitely don't want that again.

Any thoughts/advice welcome. Apparently the pineapple juice acts as a contrast medium

I would phone either the admin centre for radiology in your area and/or your diabetic nurse about this
I never knew that about pineapple juice, only ever had CT scans and they give the contrast

It turns out they they'll be using injectable contrast as well as the pineapple juice as one is positive contrast and the other is negative contrast. Not quite sure why they expect the patient to buy and bring it. I've left two messages with the radiology admin team but no call back so far

with a few proceedures have had that require fasting. the hospistals tend to try make appointments first thing. if your appointment is later on in the day +12pm i'd try ask them to change it to earlier 8-10am if at all possible. so the fast coincides more or less with your normal fasting hours. If they can't change the time for you, goto bed at a time when fast will coincide as best as possible with your sleep.

for endoscope proceedure which they wanted me to fast, i was told to still treat hypo's. magnese in the pinapple will help with contrast with the added benefit of it should quickly enable them to see your pancreas when it should be trying to do its job hoepfully that will give them a much clearer picture.

80g carbs may seem a lot, however with a glucose tolerance test its around that figure consumed. If you've not had that done before it will likely be worth while to see if that could be done at the same time worth asking dsn/consultant since taking that amount of sugars anyway.

dont worry about running a little high, doubt they'll expect you to inject for the carbs when took them, however would expect correctional dosage directly after the proceedure hope all goes well for you :)

Based on experience, I'd expect that amount of carbs to push me up to mid 20s which might be interesting. I'll see what they say but will have stuff in the car in case things go pear shaped and I end up being kept in. I've enough experience (45 surgeries) to not rely totally on their assurances that things will be managed.

I’ve had loads of scans and procedures lately to be honest for me the easiest thing is to leave my sugars run higher than normal , it’s not like is going to be for a long time , and it’s easy enough to drop your blood sugar after you’ve had your procedure .running blood sugars high for a day or two shouldn’t cause you any problems.
