Hi, welcome to the forum.

I think the longevity predictions back in the day were not good for type ones..
I know as I got older, my mum admitted she was told some depressing stuff by HCPs at the time I was diagnosed.
Though to be fair a lot of advances have been made with the technology & meds since..

I’m going to be eligible for one next year.. :)
 
I think that Eliot Joslin (the man who first suggested teaching patients how to control diabetes, not just doctors) Although wanted to encourage his patients to better monitor diabetes, because sometimes people need motivation, at least such as a medal. Initially, the medal was given for 25 years, but then medicine improved and people coped with diabetes better and better, and this medal was canceled, now you can only get it in 50 years, and by the time my diabetes reaches the right age, this medal will probably be canceled. It's not as difficult now as it used to be, when people didn't even have glucose meters and almost all diabetics had complications. Although I personally would like to receive a medal for 25 years.
 
I remember when I was first diagnosed ( 45 years ago ) they treated a man on the ward I was in like a king cos he had, had , diabetes 33 years , and in comparison to today diabetes treatment was in the dark ages so god knows what it was like when he was diagnosed , I’ve heard about actually tasting urine to see if it was sweet different but if it works
There are numerous threads on here about what it was like back over 40 years ago how did we survive lol
