Can anyone recommend a sweetener without bitter aftertaste

Hi

Can anyone recommend a good sweetener that does not have that awful aftertaste - would like to try some cakes etc but sweeteners I have tried in the past have always left an aftertaste.

Also is there a good diabetic cookbook for cakes that I can buy from anywhere that anyone could recommend? Many thanks - missing the odd treat of a cake and hubby is too.

Xylitol and Erythritol both have excellent plavour and texture, but are a bit pricey.

Xylitol is great....both myself and other half love it....replaces sugar like for like.....holland and Barrett sells it.....and on line..... Makes good cakes and muffins which I love k

Me too; my local Waitrose has started stocking it ("Free From" section), but my local health food shop has in larger and better value bags.

Kat100 - Can you tell me where you get your recipes from - is it a diabetic cookbook - do you change your flour to something else as well?

What i did was to wean myself off sugar. The desire still lurks in the background of course. If I am cooking a 'hot, sour, sweet, salty' type of dish then I use palm sugar (jaggery) as it is unrefined and natural. It's still sugar of course and looks a bit too much like fudge!

I have just tried the stevia sweeteners I bought recently and I must admit very disapointed. Not sweet at all put 3 in a coffee when usually one canderel is enough and still not sweet. Anyone else tried them ?

Dunno if this will help but I do use morrisons own brand sweetners.
Both me and hubby prefer these .

As we both found certain other brands too bitter or overly sweet roblem:

Every now and again they will get priced at half price - this is when we snap them up .
Buy in a few packs of them then :thumbup:
Have a pack of them in house, my handbag and also hubbys car too .

i use Aldi own brand sweetener in tablet form for tea and powder form for cereals etc, it tastes lie sugar and has no after taste that i can see, hope this helps

Stevia, has no taste but its pricey out here in Australia..

I have used the Aldi stevia tablets but found they are not sweet at all...

I am currently using something called Smart Sugar by CSR its half raw sugar and half stevia and I only need a level tsp of that

When I was in the UK I used to like Asdas own not sure if they still make it?

I had the same problem with Stevia, not sweet at all, usually use two Canderel but even with 4 Stevia, not sweet at all. Its also expensive!

I didn't like the Stevia sweetener either. I personally like Hermesetas tablets in my tea as it doesn't 'fizz' and leave strange bubbles on the surface like some other sweeteners. I use Canderel on my weetabix

Yes, I was very disappointed in them too. Luckily I bought them off the 'bargain' shelf at Asda, so didn't pay much for them.
I find Stevia quite bitter and not as sweet as I expected.

Can anyone tell me if you can find Xylitol as a branded name in the supermarket?

Asda own granulated sweetener is the best I have tried.

+1 for Hermesetas.

I have tried Aldi's Stevia sweeteners and didn't like the taste. And Spendour sweeteners and didn't like those either.

Bought 800 Hermesetas from Tescos for £2 odd and they taste fine.

I have found Xylitol - brand name Total Sweet - in Sainsburys. It is brilliant for cooking etc as it has no aftertaste. Have looked for it in Tescos but have never found it in there.

Apparently Tesco is selling Total Sweet too, but the details say Carbohydrate* - 100g per 100 gr

Is it a misprint? Can it be pure carbs?
The same from Holland & Barrett list that as 4 gr carbs per serving (?). I presume that is a tea spoonful?

I am using Tesco's granulated sweetener, £1.00 per plastic jar, (75 gr). I find it OK.

Just looked at the packet of Total Sweet and it is 4g carbs per 100g of which sugars Zero. GI value of 7 and suitable for diabetics. Aspartame free. Very nice although a little on the expensive side.
