Once again I have had a bad cold, and as usual it got into my lungs and as a result I've been laid up since boxing day. Worse and most frustrating for me is that it means I am going to unable to train until next weekend at the earliest, which is driving me nuts!

This is probably the 4th cold I've had this year. It's not the flu but being asthmatic as soon as it hits the lungs I start to have big problems as I am unable to easily clear fluids from my lungs and any even minor exertion triggers a long and very painful coughing fit

I know some will point the finger at the low carb diet but I do take all the long list of supplements, minerals and vitamins recommended to counteract any deficiences, plus a few others besides to support my exercise, and I actually suffered from frequent colds before I changed diet.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid these constant chest infections? I used to put it down to commuting on crowded trains but I stopped doing that back in May.

I'm not a low carber, but side effects don't include chest infections,
Have you had your flu shot?

It may be my imagination, but since I started having mine, I've missed the winter colds I used to get.

You seem to be doing the right thing by exercising Thommotherbear, my youngest had asthma and his gp said the best thing was to stay fit and partake in sports, hope you start feeling better soon!

this is very unhelpful, it justseems to me some people get ill more :( my kids do the same eat the same fight the same, one gets a cold that lays her up, the other gets a cold and she dosent even notice it, we have to ask have you got a cold because she sounds different and she shrugs and says i dont know, strangely its the diabetic one, shrug

The infections are not a result of the asthma, but the asthma makes the effects of any chest infection far worse. Ive had asthma most of my life and am extremely well controlled, not had a day of work with it since 1980!

No, I have not had a flu shot this year, had one last year and still got flu one month later. This is not flu though.

No I realised that, I think that some people are unfortunate that they are more prone to colds than others, as diabetics we have a compromised immune system so that doesn't help matters!

I'd have the flu shot, it's free, and I swear I've missed winter colds, even though the kids sneeze on me, and most of my customers as well,

The flu jab doesn't stop you getting colds Douglas.

No, it's specific to the type of virus it's intended for.
However, I seem not to have any other colds since having the shots.
Maybe I've been lucky, maybe it gives my immune system a kick overall, but either way, it costs me nothing.
I've not had the flu either.
My wife is snotting all over the place as we speak.
Me. I'm fine. :)

I too get the flu jab every year, had flu several years back and honestly thought I was on my last legs, ever since I get that jab.

the cold i went through just before christmas was my worst in years its put my training back a month at least and it came a fortnight or so after the jab, im seriously considering giving it a miss next year

Thats why I skipped this year, last years flu was the worst chest infection I have had since I had pneumonia in 1980/81

Am in exactly the same position, Thommo.
I have mild asthma, but never had a chest infection in my life, then I got Legionnaires and that changed all of that. In the last 8 years since, I've had pneumonia twice, and at least 3 chest infections per year. I've tried all kinds of supplements which are purported to aid lung health, and nothing has made a bit of difference.

I'm so paranoid about colds these days because I KNOW that they will always end up going to my chest, that I could quite easily punch anyone who dares to come near me with their germs!

Fortunately I seem to be recovering now and I may try lifting light weights tomorrow, but I wont risk cardio until the weekend.

I developed asthma symptoms when I was about 12, but was misdiagnosed by the family doctor so it was constantly being treated with antibiotics of all things, how I got through school I will never know. i caught pnuemonia when I was 24 ans it was only then that I got the right diagnosis, been very well controlled since, never been hospitalised for it and no time of work with it unless I had an infection which affected my lungs.

Strangely the increase in infections started when they put me on Qvar, cant find anything in the literature which suggests a connection though

Qvar lists throat infections as a possible side effect though.
