Reading product labels

Crowds of people, my idea of hell would be a huge gathering of any sort!

Heights, scare me to death!
Liars, cheats. poseurs, any kind of violence, thieves and people who take advantage of others.

The way the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

Global warming, the melting ice caps, whaling..I mean what for?!

Cruelty

Having to give up my eat everything philosophy..and I really really dislike consequences.
Okay how good have you become when reading product labels? Extremely good? I mean do you pass a shelf and automatically register it as high carb, low fat, high fat, high sodium etc?

Or are you still in a learning phase or couldn't you care less?

I have become much better but it still shocks me sometimes to discover what I thought was definitely one thing, something I could eat and enjoy but turns out to something completely other and a thing that is a positive no-no. I no longer buy stuff unless I have read the label first. Getting it home having NOT read the label is far too big a mistake to make especially when it's something I really really like! It sits in the cupboards whispering at me. :wacky:

Oh dear I really am losing it, my food is talking to me :confused:
 
I have been pleasantly surprised by finding things that I can eat after being advised that I can't or have believed that I can't.

When I told a nurse that I was having KFC for lunch I got a ticking off. I looked up the carb content for the original recipe chicken (the one with bones in) and it is very low carb. Go easy on the fries though.

I fancied some corned beef and decided to have some despite a feeling that it was bad for me. I checked it's carb content and it was 0 carbs. I don't know what they mean by "corned".

Someone on this board suggested Matteson's smoke porked sausage. Brilliant.

There must be more goodies out there.
 
I'm pretty good, been reading them for years now and have to say the quality of the labeling is much better than it used to be.. i jus wish we could now make restaurants give some basic info on the food they serve, ditto with things like beers.

Agree about the KFC, the classic chicken is fine in moderation as far as my BG's are concerned.

One of t worst shock was finding out the carb content of coffee shop coffees and snacks, at least some of the chains publish their nutrtional info, but basically I just avoid like the plaque
 
slowly becoming a jedi master of it lol. obviously, regular things I eat I know automatically know content, how quick it hits my blood etc. drinks I struggle with as I did used to enjoy a nice latte,cappuccino but hits my blood too quick even if giving bolus some time before. Now enjoy different varieties of black coffee. Still have them occasionally as when out shopping, certainly helps to keep bloods in check.

Hi I am not terribly good at labels yet I do read them but that has only been for saturated fats and sugar. Being on a low fat diet I do avoid anything with high saturated fat but I am not sure on carbs. I do now look at the overall carbs per 100gms but still do not really have a clue as what is the right sort of level Some things like the Lovelife bread says half the carbs but half of what amount I really don't know how much carbs per 100gms is considered high or low and what would be acceptable

I do read the nutritional information but not as much as I once did, after a time you tend to remember what they are and only ever look when experimenting with new foods. As Thommothebear says we've come a long way when it comes to information being listed on food packaging, also there's some excellent books available listing carbs, fat and calories and you can just about find anything you want to know via Google.
 
Labelling is confusing...they seem to change all the time...offering different levels of daily intake :banghead:,..i guess ill be looking for a post that explains it all to me...understanding all the elements is what i need...this forum has opened flood gates as to things i didnt realise i needed to take into account!!!!......and.........breathe!!! :confused:
