is a gp allowed to disclose your diabetes to relevant authorites ref a commercial driving licence ? I have been informed today that my licence is to be cancelled due to my diabetes , according to legislation they cannot do that where I live unless im on insulin, sulfonyureas or have a letter from a consultant stating my diabetes is not under sufficient control ,I did not inform the authorities ,I can only assume my gp did ,leaving me without my driving licence now !

I'm fairly sure you sign a disclaimer that the dvla can request information when you apply, and that the doctor can provide it.

I will have to look into it but my understanding is that once I wasn't on sulfonyureas or insulin ,I was ok ,but now ,well its gone and that's it ,that's all I need to cap off a bad day . I will check it out ,thank you

when i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes , the hospital diabetic nurse reminded me every time i visited the clinic telling me i must inform the DVLA SWANSEA, ( medical ) ill admit i hadnt informed them. my partner then told me to write to them, there sent me a few forms, one was for my doctor, at that point i still had my driving licence at home. then after all the forms were sent to them, there sent me a letter telling me i was getting a new licence that had to be renewed every 3 years and that there wanted my licence to ammend it,at that stage i was banned from driving for about 2 months, when it returned it was for cars only, all my 3.5 TON/ 7.5 TON classes mini buses, buses and taxi permits were missing. but a letter said i could re apply for them. because i was a type 1 taking insulin i wasnt allowed to drive buses.

. If you have applied for a licence and declared your diabetes you give consent for them to ask your doctor. Even if you haven't your doctor has a duty of care to the general public which may override this . http://www.medicalprotection.org/uk...en-disclosing-patient-information-to-the-dvla
If it's in the public interest the law favours disclosure.
In contrast, where I live the law of confidentiality is absolute, which is why licence determinations are decided by a third party doctor (and thus far more threatening)
(caveat previous poster mentions Ireland ;law in S Ireland may differ)

Correct, douglas99. I had to sign a disclaimer when I informed them I was diabetic.
(I'm on insulin and medication)
I'd to sign another one when I applied to have my licence renewed which expired last month.

The new licence expires in three years, but I put that down to the fact I'll be 70 this year.
Hah, maybe I'll have popped my clogs before the three years are up. :nailbiting: :joyful:

Anyway, the very best of good luck to you, shane, and I hope everything turns out to your advantage.

willie.
