Well today's the day! I see the Diabetic Nurse for the first time and can't wait to get it over with.

Not eaten since 10pm last night, been on first night shift so that was fun.

Only drank water. Cant smoke from 7.30 this morning for blood pressure reading, can't pee in case they need a sample (Nervous bladder otherwise) and tired from being awake for 15 hours.

Won't know what to do first eat, sleep, pee or smoke lol maybe doing 3 out of 4 same time lol.

I will let you know what happens lol

Cheers

Before I start can I say sorry if i offend anyone, Not meant.

I am totally pi...d off. Today was a a complete waste of time and effort!

Having just finished a 12 hour night shift, I didnt have a cig from 07.30 for my blood pressure reading. I had no food from 21.00 the night prior, and made sure I didnt have a wee before going to see nurse.

The surge ry was late opening! However i was first in. The Nurse was very nice and sat and listened while I vented my splean about the way the Doctor had told me I had Diabetes over the phone etc Turns out he WAS the Head Diabetic consultant for the practice lol Nearly fell off me chair laughing.

Anyroad, Turns out I didnt need a blood test cause A) only done 12 weeks and only been 4 since my first, Which Doctor should have known so why ask for another. B) they dont do blood tests on a Saturday!

they are more interested in my Colesterol so it shouldnt be a fasting test. Didnt want a urin sample, I felt like peeing in her sink for that one lol
didnt want a blood pressure test. Basically sat and chatted!!!

Wil refer me to some clinic for my feet checked (I'd washed em too!) and my eye test thingy, the one where my eyes look like a cat lol
My numbers can go up to 15+ as far as they are concerned its the HSBC or whatever its called number they want.

so if I want to eat fish and chips i can go ahead!! I told her I lost 7 Lb in 2 weeks, stopped coffee, self testing etc. NOTHING. No "Well done" kiss my **** or here have a cake!

The whole practice couldnt organize a B.... Job in a ......

so I went to Gregs and had 2 pasties lol, 6 cigs and a lovely long weeeeeeee then got to bed at 11am. 5 hours behind my normal time.

Sorry its a long rant. Phew feel better now. So hows your day been dear?

Cheers

Hi Tigger,
sorry you had a rubbish appointment, dont know what else to say but ty for making me smile:p

I truly believe we must have the same medical practice !
On your intro to diabetes, did the nurse read word for word from the magazine .. Holding her finger under each word like it was a Janet and John book .... No room for questions or chat ... Then to add insult to injury she gave me the magazine to take home..... I waited 45 mins past my appointment time for this .. Also was told to bring my wife to this appointment .. There was no chair for her and she was told to sit on the examination table in the far corner of the room... So could not hear what was being said.
I don't trust to wish to have anything to do with this stupid diabetic team .. I would change docs but my heart failure nurse is amazing .. So don't want to loose her support in managing my heart condition.
I just wanted to say that your not alone in being treated like this by medics .......

Hi Tigger
Sorry to hear about your disappointing visit to the docs, sometimes I think they do it for kicks.
Last time I went for fasting bloods, the nurse asked me to wait while she had her tea and toast - in front of me.
On another occasion, I asked about an opthalmology appointment ( for retinal eye screen) and was told diabetics don't usually have ear problems!
I'm currently plotting my revenge, please feel free to give me any suggestions...

Hi Tigger,

Sorry you have been treated so badly, hopefully things will get better. So glad you have a cracking sense of humour !!! you will need it with your GP's, mine are the same .

There just seems to be so much confusion, left hand right hand etc. If I was so unorganized Id go to bed wearing a crash helmet and riding my motorbike in me PJs lol I did get the impression they don't like people who take control of their life! Bloody good job I do cause couldnt trust it to them they might just loose it in the back of a filing cabinet or something

Cheers

I got a better response in Gregs lol
I told you it was going to be fun, didn't I ? lol
Seriously, I didn't expect it to be such a shambles. It just goes to show that it's just as well following a homemade plan from a forum like this one.
It's as though the medical team have a blanket approach to diabetes iwthout really understanding the implications in real life.

Cannot believe they got it so wrong... You waited all that time with no food and all for nothing. That is a terrible way to treat a Diabetic!
And, your poor bladder!!
lolol @ HSBC ... I take it you mean the HbA1c. hehe
You're gonna do just great. Go at your own pace.

Oh dear Tigger, welcome to the world of Type 2 Diabetes! I've had appointments that are just about as organised as yours was.

In my experience, typically, the healthcare professionals don't really appreciate the concerns that us T2's have about our health and aren't always a big help. At my own latest and greatest Nurse appointment I expressed concern about my ever increasing blood sugar levels, despite exercising and eating a low carb diet. I was met with the standard response of "I believe you... but your blood sugar levels indicate that this is diet and exercise related, so come back in 2 months after you've had your hba1c". No real concern about the daily highs of mid-teens, no real concern about anything.

The best thing that you can do is take the bull by the horns, and take control of your situation yourself. No one can help you out better than you can help yourself.... so keep doing what you are doing, testing, testing, testing.

Well done on losing the weight!! That's a huge achievement and proves that you are doing this the right way!

I can't believe that you had to go so long without food... i can;t go that long iwthout some sustenance. I couldn't do my last Fasting Test because I needed to eat upon waking. Did you get all weak and wobbly, I do when I need food.
I was told to not eat after 6pm and my test was 9am next day, that's 15 hours!!

"didnt have a cig from 07.30 for my blood pressure reading"

if you arent having a cig just to give you a better blood pressure reading, surely you are just kidding yourself and the doctors and ignoring what your 'normal' blood pressure is doing? Wouldnt you prefer the doctors to know what your everyday blood pressure is doing?
By not smoking 12 hours before the test just to give a better reading, surely you could be giving the doctors false readings and you could be ignoring a possible life threatening situation?

I dont mean to sound rude or harsh, but why would you do that?

i knew somebody who did the same before her hospital appointments. she was diabetic and also smoked. The doctors always thought she was doing alright and then suddenly she ended up in A&E and had to have a tripple bypass. Because she was diabetic and smoked, her organs started failing after the surgery. She had huge pipes going in everywhere and remained unconscious in a high care unit for 4 weeks. She did pull through in the end and if you speak to her today, she will never do that again.
