Diabetes UK national conference to have low carb debate !

Was any distinction made between T1s and T2s, or those using MDI or pumps?

And CGMs of course, which help enormously in guiding you re. what type of carbs and what combinations of food affect blood sugar rises (and the rate of ascent, which is fascinating when you can specifically relate it to what you've just eaten)??

Apparently it is time that we stopped advising people with diabetes to eat carbohydrates !!!!! Amazing debate and 'we' won 70:30 Trudy Deakin was inspired and gave a great talk - including a positive mention of all you low carbers on this site !, There was even a slide of one of Sam JB posts in front of hundreds of people at the National DUK conference . Another slide featured my work so I'm dead chuffed. Such an exciting day The emphasis of Trudy's talk was educating about diabetes so that then people can have a better idea of the diet that suits them personally YES I AGREE

So, what was the definition of low carb diet that won the day?

What portion of carbs, or g, will be the recommended size from now?

I take it high fat was also recommended.
What percentage?

Finally, lets hope there is now a change to the ridiculous guidelines currently used. i am not holding my breath however.

Did they say what happened to the original speaker? Trudi Deakin is not the person originally billed to speak .
She is well qualified as the founder and chief executive of the Xpert course.

I will be interesting to see a report of this debate: Trudi Deakin was involved in a similar debate published last year(I think the debate was actually in 2012) Without comment (except that in this debate I would have had to abstained in a final vote on the debate recorded here. (both sides made good points)

The original speaker unfortunately unwell so Trudy stepped in only a few days ago Yes a few years ago she did argue for the other side of the debate

I'm still a little puzzled about what low carbs really are and exactly what I should be eating apart from veg, veg, more veg, and oats of course! I would like to have heard the debate but, having not done so, and having all these various comments put forth, I'm now getting a little unsure about what I really should be eating! I think I'm doing my best. I've got my sugar down tremendously in the last three months and also managed a good weight loss, so I think I'm really doing okay, aren't I!

I think she said there wasn't much evidence for T1s though I think there are quite a few on this forum

I'd be very surprised if the For argument 'won' but am personally hoping that the overall outcome will provide recognition that cutting carbohydrates can be appropriate and successful in at least certain individuals.

In my case, adopting a low carb approach (now 4 years or so of having around 45-90g carbs a day) very much turned my life around for the better.
Surprise !, that's pretty well exactly what did happen . Many folk in the room were quite happy that this was a valid choice for some individuals.

i didnt get mentioned? :wideyed: what a rubbish debate that must have been, im much better looking than sam! what kind of people are they? pffft

Oh that's a shame. I think the Type 1 nut will be an even tougher one to crack though because many Type 1s have been lulled into a false sense of security and are openly hostile to any mention of low-carb in the same sentence as Type 1 . However, there are many of us who do low-carb and maintain very good BGs as a result.

Well done though!

I'm a type 1.
My blood sugars have never been better and my highs and lows are nowhere near as extreme.
Got my HbA1c back and for the second time in a row it is 6.5% in old money. I know that it is based on a much smaller range if blood sugars than before I started lchf.

And yet Dr Richard Bernstein is T1. Isn't it odd that the diet he follows and treats his patients with has somehow become associated only with T2?

I would imagine that that would be the next progressive step, hopefully. It ought to be, at least
