Hello everyone,

Just after a bit of advice and opinion form those much more experienced than I!

My daughter (6) has had flu and has been off school all week having been quite poorly. As you can imagine, her levels have been all over the place and she has had ketones constantly, ranging from 0.5 up to 3.3.

She's much better in herself now but those bloody ketones just aren't shifting. They drop right down early on in the day (having done correction doses during the night) and are fine when she's drinking lots but they creep up again as the day goes on, and over night.

I am happy that we're doing all of the right things but just wondered what everyone would do school wise, if she's the same come Monday and going back to school. Do I just judge it entirely on her general health? I don't know how quickly the situation can deteriorate and I can't be on her case all day at school about drinking! Also, they won't know what to do with the correction doses & illness button etc. though I could teach them or go in myself to do jabs?

What would everyone else do?

Hope all this makes sense.

I would keep her off school until things settle down, it can take at least a couple of weeks to get over flu and the after-effects of it.

Hi Dune Plodder

We were in constant contact with the DSN - they are wonderful here - and had a plan should we need to go in to hospital (I even had a bag packed!)

Luckily we managed to avoid another stay and they haven't been that high again, thankfully.

I'll have a look at the link, thanks for taking the time to post it.

Does your daughter hate missing school herself or just a worry for you?
My daughter gets upset when we have her hospital 3 monthly checks even though its for a hour !! They seem to love school at that age, shame it dont last .

The list is endless, isn't it!?

She was so poorly when she was first poorly that I don't think she actually cared where she was but the novelty has definitely worn off and she's missing her friends :(

Funny, pre-diabetes my children had to have their heads practically falling off and rolling down the street before they got a day off sick!

Hi Laura,
It's good to hear that you have such a good supportive & proactive DSN - not always the case.
Hope your daughter feels better very soon.
