metformin and transplant meds

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I've had type2 for about 6 years now. I was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis 4 years ago and wzs lucky enough to get a single lung transplant 3 years ago. After the transplant my diabetes got worse due to the steroids I then had to take insulin three times a day. After a year or so, and reduced steroids I managed to control the diabetes with diet. Ive now got a little worse and been prescribed metformin. After a few days I got badly sick and had diarrhoea so stopped taking them, this stopped the problem. I tried again some days later with the same result. The doctor is unsure what to prescribe now due to the immunosuppressive s I'm taking. Does anyone have a similar problem and take something different to metformin.
 
Were you prescribed the Metformin SR as this can be kinder on the stomach. There are other classes of meds which don't have this side effect.

Thanks Denise, Yes the second round with the Metformin was with the slow release as, like you say, I was told they may be kinder to my stomach. Unfortunately with the same result.

I was sick on Metformin but am OK on Glucophage odd because thats the name of metformin. Ask to try it.
 
Thanks Ruth, I'll ask but like you say it just looks like it's a different firm marketing the same product under a different name. I think you'll see that the approval certificate number is the same for both which means the formulation has to be the same. Still, one can but ask. Thanks again.

I thought they were the same it may be something to do with dose as I am almost instantly sick if I try to take 2 metformin . close to one another even on glocophage. My GP is very good so puts up with me change blood sugar monitors frequently. But have stuck with my accu check mobile.

Thanks Ruth. I'm having a similar problem with two, even spread apart, 8am with breakfast and 6pm with dinner. I visited my doctor today and she advised I shoukd stick with one for now if I can manage it without being sick. It seems, she says, I'm better persevering with the metformin that has the best results re mortality (!) than alternatives, bearing in mind my immunosuppression medication.
