you just can't stop at one lick you would have to pull them apart and drag your teeth through the cream. Well done for resisting that the hardest part over with. I am sure your husband will learn. When I went on my diabetics course my wife went with me so she could lean as well. So make sure he goes along as support when you attend yours if you get to take support
Unfortunately I have my course awareness day in a months time and it states that there is no room for partners!

Hi Lin!
Well done for finding this forum! It has been a life saver for me! My doc was useless and as for the dn......! The problem is there are many different ways of tackling diabetes so my advice would be to read everything, choose the one which makes most sense and stick with it. Some docs don't prescribe monitors and strips because the bottom line is that they are too expensive. If this is the case, then you need to buy your own. Sd codefree monitors are cheap and the strips via ebay cost £7. I originally bought accu check . You can buy the strips anywhere but they cost £25.
I advocate LCHF - low carb high fat. Try www.dietdoctor.com
I have lost 1.5 stones so far. Low GI is also popular. Good luck!

That is such a shame - just think you can tell your hubby whatever you want, such as "You must keep your skin in tip top condition so he will have to do all the washing up from now on" and many other devious things. There are always advantages to every situation.

So you now "need" to decide if you want to head down the low carb high fat route or the low GI/portion control route (I would also set yourself a carb target with this which is a lower than that recommended by the NHS and then slowly raise it up if you wish once you have control)

PS I quoted need because you really don;t need to do anything that is your choice but I couldn't think of an appropriate softer word

Hi Lin

Great advice on the meter received, and the app, i found recording everything as essential as what i ate

Breakfast. Two shredded wheat, skimmed milk. Bran flakes, poached eggs on homemade seeded bread.
Marmite toast butter.

Lunch. Wrap, salad, chicken. Boiled egg cress sand which. Pasta...jacket potato cheese beans
Yoghurt. Quavers. Pitta ham salad.. Soup. Tinned salmon sand which

Dinner. Pasta bake Roast dinner. Jackets. Spicy rice + sausages. Curry. Bolognese. Chilli

All meals include 3 or 4 vegetables. All homemade.

Snacks. Fruit. 5 portions daily. All fruits eaten except advacado.

Desserts. One or twice a week only. Homemade ice cream Sponge. Crumble. Rice pudding

All pasta, rice, bread, is a mixture of white and brown.
Milk is always skimmed.
New potatoes eaten with skin on.
Jackets eaten with skin.

All veg is steamed.

Love fish but eat rarely as too expensive!

ive highlighted in red the stuff i wouldnt eat, its way too carby, the bread is a no no for me unless its "livlife" bread sold at waitrose and some morrisons, you will read alot on the forum about "low carbing" basically carbohydrate and starch are sugar, once we eat them our bodies digest them as sugar, you may as well be eating sugar, in fact wholemeal bread is more sugary than tate & lyle sugar, so you must cut out carbs, not completely but a huge reduction, how much of a reduction will depend on your meter readings, the fruit i would say should be berries, but again the testing will tell you about this stuff, but to begin with id advise cutting it all out and reintroducing things whilst testing to see what you can tolerate, ive simplified all this, i hope thats ok, its a huge subject and needs alot of research, knowledge is power, all my advice is only from the world according to andy12345 book, im not medically trained whatsoever, so you are very welcome to ignore every word :) i know absolutely nothing about your other problems and what effect cutting out the carbs would have on them so pleae listen to others, but if carbs are sugar, we as diabetics cant deal with the sugar so it makes sense cutting them out, there are alternatives to many of the foods in the recipe section on the forum,

we understand the emotional effect diagnosis has as we`ve all been through similar, give yourself time to digest it all, its not a race, your hubby will also be on a bit of a ride so you may have to cut him a break :) please ask s many questions as you want to, its never too much trouble for folks here to share their experiences so please dont ever think your asking too many questions as thats impossible, the advice to cut out carbs is very easy to say but a huge big deal when you try to get your head around it, we are/were carboholics nd some can never change, some cold turkey, some do it over time and some completely disagree that its neccessary, its a good thing that we re ll different and react differently and cope in different ways but it can also be a pain in the bum when you just want to know what to do, but take a breath, theres plenty of time :) i would guess your eyes will improve when your numbers improve when your use of carbs improve (did i mention carb? lol)

anyway ill stop rambling on, i hope some of what ive said makes sense and is helpful, please remember its ok to ignore it all :) my wife does :p

Thanks Andrew. Lol. He already does so much for me, he's not well himself.
Prob not the high fat version as strokes run in my family, so tend to try not to eat much fat, also had gallbladder removed but fats still trouble my system . So will look at portion sizes, low gi.

It was not my intention to upset you. You had queried why your post here had not been answered or if you had put it in the right place when you posted on another thread. If my choice of words was not to your liking then so be it.

I merely replied with the reason that you may not have had any replies.

We all get emotional with the diagnosis of diabetes and with your other health problems you must be feeling very low.

This article has helped people explain why we feel so emotional at diagnosis. You may like to read it.

I will keep away from your posts if your description of mine is a negative one. Your reaction was not what I expected and I was only trying to help.:(
Thanks for referring me to the five stages of grief. Just read it. Omg. So very true. Think I'm at the dreppressed/accepting stage. Sort of swinging between the two.

Excellent advice as always! :)
Hi Andy.
Thank you so much. I had to laugh at the highlighting, I should lose some weight as I have not much left to eat. I've lost 18lb in a month. Think some was water. Although not hugely big I wanted to lose some for ages. Unfortunately when I had the radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid it knocked it all out, so no thyroid of my own and I gained over 3 stone. Not a happy lady. Endo not bothered re weight as still trying to get my levels ok. Wish I was a chocolate lover it would be easier than giving up carbs as I like them all in all forms. Thanks for your reply. X

there are so many alternatives, read the recipe section, still hard though :) could be worse though, you could have something you cant fix, diabetes sucks, but it sucks because WE can fix it, it means we have to find the strength to do it, and i know in my heart you have that strength, you will be fine, and when you hit the bumps in the road we can smooth them out together x

Lin, I've also had my gall bladder removed and can't tolerate fatty foods, so I eat low fat, medium protein and low-er carb and it seems to work for me. Once you have your meter you will find out what you can and can't eat and you may be surprised what you can tolerate. Eating lower carb (about 100 - 150g) a day seems OK for me, plus I have lost 3 stones which helps, 1 stone before diagnosis and 2 after, since end November. I try now to keep my BG levels as close to non diabetic as I can. Once or twice a week I may spike to 8+/9, but so do non diabetics. If I spike like that I test again after an hour or so and am usually back to normal (5+ for me now).
There is such a lot of info to take in you can't do it all at once, I reckon it will be about a year before I feel sorted out properly.

Take care, B x

Thanks Beshlie. That helps. Well done with your weight loss it's great. I would like to lose 3.5 stone which would put me back at 10stone which is what I was pre RAI thyroid issue. I'm 5ft 7 so think even 11 st would be great. I was 7st when I got married lol, no hope of seeing that figure again. Mind you I think I would look ill at that. Quite scared but excited at getting my meter next week, soooo much to absorb, my head is buzzing!
Having either Chinese or Indian takeaway tonight as Mother's Day. Thinking if I have the meat, veg and small rice should be reasonable ok

You will know when you reach the right weight for you, you can't always go by the charts as we are built differently. I have about 1.1/2 stones to go to reach my right BMI, but the last month I seem to have stuck!
I hope you enjoy your takeaway :).
