Hi all.

Recently diagnosed type 2. Started with thirst, weight gain, tiredness, vision loss.
Optician referred as vision changed so drastically in 5 months since last test.
She changed lenses in my frames so at least I could see as kept missing stairs etc. and she asked me to stop driving for the moment. I have not driven since valentines day.

Since starting in gliclazide 40mg twice daily and changing diet a few things have happened.

My vision got much worse, having time off work.

Then it changed again so I could not now see out of new prescription.

But I could use my previous glasses.

Now I can see clearer with no glasses!!

But my close vision is much worse .

Can't use current reading glasses bUT I can use reading glasses made for when I used to wear contacts!

Is this normal?

Do I go back to optician?

I asked nurse and she had no idea!!!

Would like to return to work and drive again but don't want to break the law.

Help please
Thanks

I think it's fairly common for extreme variations in BG levels to affect vision. Hopefully once your BG becomes stable, your vision will settle back to normal as well.

Hi Lin,

I had very blurred vision in January this year. I went to the optician they prescribed new distance glasses with non glare lenses. However, I did tell the optician that I had been diagnosed with borderline diabetes the year before and that I was also seeing starbursts and halo's round street lights etc., When I got the results of my HBA1c test in February confirming I was T2 diabetic the nurse said that the optician should have picked up the symptoms and referred me to my gp as vision problems is a typical sign of T2 db and once you have stabilised your bg levels it takes about 6 weeks for you eyes to settle down and the glasses would be no good. I went back to the optician and told him and they have agreed to take a further eye test and replace my glasses free of charge.

So you really need to get you bg under control and you will find that your vision will slowly improve, so try not to worry too much at this stage.

Hope this has helped.
