Hi all,

I have been diagnosed for about 5 weeks now. I started on 1 x Metaforin 500g twice a day. My BG after the first two weeks went down from 17.3 to 12.1. On my second visit to the DN she increase my Metaforin to 1 x 500g in the morning and 2 x 500g in the evening. I was also given 1 x Glicalazide 80g tablet to take with my evening meal. Now my BG levels have come right down and my bedtime read is anything from 5 to 6.7 which I don't think is to bad. But when I test first thing in the morning it is reading between 7.1 and 8.6. I am confused why this is happening, I am sure that I am not raiding the fridge in my sleep. I have taken the advise on lowering my carbs, I try to have them in only my evening meal and in very small amounts ie 4 small new potatoes. I am over weight but have already lost 17lbs. I am worried that when I see the DN she will want to increase my tablets again which is not the route that I wish to take. Or am just being silly as I am only five weeks into this journey. Thanks for reading.

your blood glucose levels drop through the night and your liver releases more glucose into your system. The metformin reduces the amount the liver releases. Those numbers aren't too bad and as you lose more weight they will come down further. Well done so far.

Make sure you DN knows you wish to try and reduce your medications over time and talk to her about how you are improving your situation with your diet and I hope some exercise. This is great for bringing levels down as the muscles just soak up the sugar but only when you use them. It doesnt need strenuous exercise just some walking or if you don;t want to go out climb the stairs for about 250 steps (up and down)

This is the exact opposite of what succeeded with me. I did a number of tests where I would have no carbs at all after 4pm, I ate just the meat and veg. Over a period of some days the morning readings got lower. I did this test six times and it worked every time.

I have some carbs with lunch most days without a problem.

5 weeks is early days and you may still be coming to terms with the shock of having diabetes

diet and exercise, supplemented by medication is the first line of treatment.
why are you scared about more metformin for your morning levels, if needed? I would ask to take 4x500 metformin it's the safest of all the diabetic drugs and see if I could reduce my Glicalazide
have you read about the Low carb high fat diet LCHF, a lot here are on?

I found I had to drop all grain and grain product, along with potato before I could reduce my meds
