Diet v medication?

Just had my results of an HbA1c test from early April. Now 39 Mmol/mol or 5.7% down from 82 or 9.6% in December. So quite pleased. I have lost 50 lbs so far which is the main reason for the improved glucose levels (IMHO).

I would discuss this with the doctor. In the dicussion, I'd bring up the point that lifestyle changes seem to have brought hings under control and that lifestyle changes don't lead to drug side effects. I always prefer to avoid "Pharmaceuticals".

PS anyone who follows the "Eat plenty of complex carbohydrates and low fat" advice.will find it almost impossible to keep blood glucose down. Incidentally, NICE told me that they don't advocate that advice.
The dietary changes that actually work are: reduce carbs, reduce portions.eat natural foods.

Well done Syd. 50lbs is a mighty weight loss. Do you have any more to go?

I am evangelically non-medicated, and would like to stay that way for as long as possible; ideally forever. It's not a route that suits everyone, but for those who are able to work with it, it's very satisfying.
 
Very well done Syd. I was given Metformin as soon as I was diagnosed last November but both it and the SR upset my stomach too much so now I control my BG with diet and remain in the non diabetic range. I feel I was 'pushed' onto Metformin before was given a chance to try diet control. It was finding this website that I found out so much.
 
When I was diagnosed in January my appointments got out of order and I saw the DN before my GP. The DN never mentioned Metformin and sent me away to diet and exercise for 3 months. Then I saw my GP who said she was surprised the nurse hadn't prescribed Metformin. So it seems I was lucky that I saw them that way round.

I've still a few pounds to lose yet. Ideally 30 lb or so. This should not be too difficult. The hard part as I have found out to my cost in the past is keeping the weight off, but that is a bridge to be crossed in the future.

Almost as good as your reduction in BG level (I see from your signature).

Losing the weight is the key. I haven't particularly gone low carb or low fat, but just ate less and exercised a bit more.
