Europe's largest diabetes community forum, Diabetes.co.uk, has teamed up with TV's Dr Hilary Jones to raise awareness of diabetes and the distinction between the different types of diabetes - in particular the distinctions between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the challenges faced by people managing their condition. Dr Hilary Jones himself has experience of being a parent to a child with Type 1 diabetes: "My son Tristan developed Type 1 diabetes when he was seven so I know first hand the challenges faced by both the patient and parent. Diabetes.co.uk provides an invaluable resource not only for patients but also for families and carers. Together we hope to offer support and advice to the diabetes community." DCUK and Dr Hilary Jones aim to provide education and support to the diabetes community through the Diabetes.co.uk forum, which helps improve the lives of those with diabetes worldwide. The diabetes forum is a support network for people who have diabetes, their family, friends and carers, whilst also offering people the chance to share stories, questions and experiences. The Diabetes.co.uk Forum was commended by the Quality in Care Awards in 2013 for Best Initiative Supporting Self-care. Arjun Panesar, Director at Diabetes.co.uk commented, saying: "By working together, we can raise even more awareness about diabetes – both Type 1 and Type 2 – and the differences between them." Around 3 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes and a further 850,000 are undiagnosed. In the UK alone, 400,000 people live with Type 1 diabetes and 29,000 of these are children. Diabetes.co.uk raised awareness for people with diabetes through the #BloodSugarSelfie campaign that was run last month, raising funds and awareness for the JDRF and Diabetes UK.
