Newbie to Low Carb... High Sugars

Hi all, was hoping someone can help me, I have just started Low Carbing, consuming about 50 - 100 grams per day of carbs. However i cannot seem to bring my sugars down. I reduced my insulin initially but i am finding that i am not taking much less than when i was when i was eating high carb, is there something im doing wrong. I have poor control and really want to bring my health under control and was hoping this was the way. Can someone please give me some guidance on this. Im testing 4-6 times a day and can not for the life of me know why there running high. Im also approx 3 stone overweight if thats having any bearing on the sugars :-) thanks in advance.
 
I'm not a T1, so not best to placed to advise you, however, I think it would be useful to give us an idea of what you're actually eating and drinking on your modified eating plan.

I'm sure others will be along in due course.
 
Hi. My basal rates didn't reduce much with low carb, but my bolus did.

As said above it would be helpful to post what you are eating so everyone can make suggestions for you about your diet / what to do next.

I found that without carbs I needed to bolus for protein too (as in the absence of carbs some protein is converted to glucose through glycogenesis) however I only eat 30g of carbs a day and I am not sure at which point of low carbing this happens, so hopefully someone else will be able to advise more on this.

Losing weight will improve your insulin sensitivity, as will most forms of exercise. What are you eating ? I wouldn't consider 100 g of Carbs per day as low carb , I would have problems controlling my BS on that amount.

I am not aware of a required minimum amount fat for low carbing. In my experience too much fat can lead to insulin resistance. I used to eat cheese on a daily basis , since quitting it I have seen a vast improvement in both cholesterol and blood sugar. It is a fine balance.

The problem can often be protein. If you cut down on carbs you have to up something else and if you eat protein instead of carbs your bg can go up quite a lot and high protein might also cause damage to the kidneys, while fat only fills you up. So if someone has no particular success bg wise on low carb it may be that the protein intake is too high and the problem might sole itself with a lower protein and higher fat intake.

You sound like you have been NHS brainwashed. My understanding is high protein is not recommended if you already have impaired kidney function, then it may lead to kidney damage. High carbs = poor control, this will definitely lead to kidney damage along with blindness , amputation.

No, for the high protein/kidney damage comment. Your comment sounded exactly like my doctor when I was engaged a long low carb dispute with him. I've been low carbing for 2 years (high protein , medium to low fat intake and 30 g of carbs) ,based on my last blood works my kidney function has actually improved.
 
Hi thanks for all the info. For breakfast I would have 2 eggs scrambled with mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Lunch would be either spinach lasagne or selection of meat slices or crust less bacon and onion quiche. Dinner is stir fry with cauliflower rice or quiche or lasagne.

Only doing this since Monday have already lost 3lbs and feel more full on this plan than eating bread, pasta rice etc. So I really want it to work for me.

Cblake843 still getting the hang of counting carbs. Low carb to me was not eating bread, pasta, rice

Stick at it , good luck. I'd skip the coffee though, caffeine raises my blood sugar so can milk (lactose).

It seems my kidneys are recovering too on a high fat diet.

I cant really see the point with a high protein intake while a high intake of natural fats like butter, lard, coconut oil and olive oil is filling and healthy and very good for bg control. Fine if high protein and lowish fat works for you, but there is no reason at all to be afraid of fat.
 
Do you think ok should reduce my protein and up my fat intake for better control? Never realised protein can raise levels, how do you calculate protein to insulin ratio, or even just advice on how others do it

I find that I have to stay clear of saturated fats or keep them very minimal. Insulin resistance and high cholesterol tend to be the outcome of too much saturated fats.
