'Newcastle diet' advice

Think that when I can resume exercising I will try both and see what happens to me and my levels. Eyes are healing very nicely (according to the surgeon) so should be OK on Thursday to get back on the treadmill. Will also be good to be able to wash my own hair again!
Glad to hear you are recovering well from eye surgery.
If I was exercising on treadmill I think, depending on how long and speed of exercise I would tend not to have had much to eat before, saving the bulk of food, ( or meal replacement) for after.

I just need a shift in my way of thinking. Sort of got my "tomorrow head" on at the moment. Will keep reading posts here and I am sure will be inspired.

I don't really like to dish out advice because there's nothing worse than an outspoken reformed character. I just wanted to suggest you take each day at a time and try not to look to far down the road.

Swimming is good so well done. I'm wondering if your health professionals can suggest suitable exercise? I don't know what your limitations are but many aerobic and yoga specialists cater for people with limitations.
I myself would like to look into yoga but I'm not very flexible and my knees are quite painful. I find kneeling extremely difficult. I wondered about tai chi too.

I now have my 'yesterday' head on. Been doing Newcastle for two and a half weeks. Weight falling, and I have appointment for HbA1c results and review tomorrow. I am going to rethink the whole food thing this week, as although I have had a great deal of success in the past on Newcastle diet, I am finding it tedious at the moment. I have cravings for some good protein, so maybe the low carb way is what I need.
I have been seeing a very good physio who has given me some manageable exercises, and suggested a Pilates dvd. I have the dvd, it is good, but I am hearing impaired and the instructor has an Australian accent which is difficult to understand particularly as there is music in the background. I am trying to read subtitles and follow the programme at the same time. Not easy as I am also short sighted, but it is amusing me.
I have done tai chi in the past, and would recommend it as a calming, and strengthening exercise. Unfortunately not able to do that anymore due to impairments.

I have always felt most comfortable in water. I can move without pain, and almost feel as though I am able bodied again. Getting to the pool is difficult and the council is closing many of the pools where I live. I am slowly building up to, hopefully, the level of fitness through water exercise that I had a year or so ago. It will be a long struggle due to having two major operations recently, but I will find a way, or make a way.

So glad for you Pipp! I wondered if you might try the Newcastle again but then thought perhaps it's not allowed if you've already done it once. Well done! I think I might route out a tai chi class or try Pilates. Thanks and keep up the good work!!

Newcastle is fine. It worked well for me before. Even though I regained some weight, so far (fingers crossed as I get blood results tomorrow) my blood glucose has been normal for two and a half years. I am still about 35kg lighter than I was before I first did Newcastle, though a long way to go before I am just overweight instead of obese. My main reason to do Newcastle this time is to ensure blood glucose does not rise again. Although I have health issues it is nowhere near as bad as when I was in diabetic blood glucose range.

Experience of other folk on forum is really helping.

I am having a bad day today. I had hoped that with this Newcastle diet I would be getting consistently normal readings by now, and lots of them are, but still some 'rogue' readings. I read yesterday that the fasting readings are the most important, and should be between 4-5.6. If between 5.7-6.9 then pre-diabetic, and anything over 7 diabetic. Mine are ranging between 4.5-5.8 now, though I have stuck faithfully to the diet, never cheat and have lost 26.7 kg so far. The only thing I eat apart from the vegetables is the occasional piece of chicken breast. I do so want to reverse this and will keep going but feel less optimistic now. But still 20.9 kg to lose, so maybe I'm expecting too much too soon.
 
Back on treadmill on Thursday! Perhaps this will help. Eyes healing well and no problems so on track.

Sorry you are not so good today.

Have you stayed on Newcastle without a break since January? Just a thought, but maybe take a break? The reason I say this is that when I did Newcastle almost 3 years ago I did nine weeks to start, had a break of six weeks were I ate low carb and lean protein, then another six weeks Newcastle. I had a discussion with doctor at weight management clinic who said better long term results are from weight loss, then consolidation / plateau period before weight loss again.
Also, daily blood glucose readings do not give as good an overall picture as HbA1c tests which show average over previous 3 months. You may be doing better than you thought, and don't forget your weight loss is phenomenal. Your recent eye surgery could have an effect on blood glucose too. The rogue readings could maybe just an anomaly. I know I had some strange b g readings, at times, but HbA1c results presented the truer picture of what was going on.

@paulins - don't despair! You are seeing what I saw in the early days Remember that I only started testing at 1.5 months after starting my diet but I saw a much larger variation in fasting numbers in the early days than I do now

When I have anything above 5.2 I can now trace it to protein the night before.
 
Thanks Andrew and Pipp. I'll keep going, and perhaps use low carb and very lean protein for a while then go back to Newcastle. I suppose we will all get lows as well as highs and we just have to roll with them. It is just so hard to stay motivated when it seems not to be working.

Andrew - we are exactly the same weight now! I seem to have been stuck here for ages! For the past two evenings I have had roasted veg for dinner, and the only difference seems to be that there were carrots which I don't usually eat. Both evenings my levels were higher at the 2 and 3 hr stages, and both mornings afterwards we a bit higher.

Pipp - you are right, surgery may have had an impact. Ho hum. It's an unpredictable old life!

Nope hit 13 st 3 lb this morning :rolleyes: - you have to go for another few days before you overtake me. Well done by the way. Interesting about carrots, I eat them everyday but in raw form as I don't really like them cooked. Never noticed any impact from them but as they are raw maybe they are just giving a steady increase across many hours due to the slowness of digestion.
 
Blast! Will I ever catch up with this man! Ha ha. Will keep trying.

must have been the hour on the treadmill last night and then again this morning. I am rapidly running out of things to watch then the treadmill will become boring
 
Yes Pipp you will. We need to keep motivating and supporting each other. I keep telling myself to have realistic goals. I'll follow Andrew and you follow me! Andrew, how can you hear the TV over the racket the treadmill makes?

Well, despite still having a lot of weight to lose before I become merely overweight not obese, I have good news.

HbA1c test results yesterday, 41, (slightly incresed from last test, but possibly due to having major surgery, and being fairly immobile for several months, also having to eat food prepared by others) BP 170/80, cholesterol 3.9, liver function etc all normal. Taken off metformin. If at next test in 3 months HbA1c has not raised Nurse is considering taking me off diabetic register.

Staying with Newcastle diet for another week. But looking at other ways to eat as I know I will always have to eat and exercise like a diabetic.
 
Excellent news Pipp! Well done you! But even if off the register stay on the forum as we need you.

Those are great blood sugar numbers and your weight loss is incredible. You are a success story.
