Cholesterol: cue the violins

I know I have the same problem .....but I am now going to look on amazon x
You can get the Greens sachets in the supermarkets. If you live near a Muslim community, they stock in their shops too. Not greens but just as good and I think cheaper. In fact veggies are often cheaper there too.

I followed a link last night from something on the dietdoctor site- some New Zealand low carb guru think it was.. anyway whoever it was, the article was about how for some people, usually those with a family history of heart disease and high cholesterol, that the high fat element of the LCHF bit might be better translated as LC moderate good fats- so he advocated cutting out the cream and reducing butter and cheese and instead focusing on olive oil, nuts, oily fish and leaner meats to get your fat fix. This is sort of what I have been doing as one GP says statins and the other says lose weight and control BS first. As my Dad has cholesterol issues I've always steered clear of full fat dairy and have tried to watch fat intake in general. I know that the oodles of fat is what attracts some folk to the diet, but I think that some of us just have to accept that we need to watch them a bit more closely.,

Saw this. If my readings haven't gone down may look into this.

Your Trig/HDL ratio is within limits (under 2 is ideal)
Your Total/HDL ratio is slightly raised. (should be under 4)
Trigs just on the upper limit
HDL just on the lower limit
LDL too high except you don't know the breakdown between good ones and bad ones.

Dare I say the word Statins? I was put on them on diagnosis. 3 weeks later I had another test and my cholesterol had dropped massively. They work very quickly. I have since taken myself off them until my next test to see what happens. Would you be averse to taking them for 3 or 4 weeks rather than cutting out your butter, eggs, cheese etc? Only a thought because your levels aren't disastrous. Probably a silly thought.
Of course you can say the word statins lol

There's been so much publicity about them. I won't say never but at the moment I want to say no. I'll stick with the LCHF for now with a few tweaks. I'll see what happens in November. At least I know what to do if no change. Thanks again.

Thanks for that! No cholesterol issues in my family. However my sister is now on warfarin (spelling?) due to blood clotting problems ... Don't know if that's connected. I eat all the things you mention, nuts, olive oil etc and was addicted to cheese and cut it between November and February. I added it back in after reading about LCHF and added butter and eggs. I think you might have a point. I don't really need the butter as well as the olive oil and I've probably overdone the cheese for my own body's needs. I'll tweak.

Thanks so much.

I think sometimes when we are already denying ourselves so much, like the beautiful spud bake I could smell cooking at my Mum's house earlier, there's a temptation to treat ourselves with the nice things we can still have. I know I could so easily eat a pound of cheese and think that's ok, it''s fat and I can have fats, but because I have so much weight to lose, I've been buying the variety packets of Cathedral City and having one of their 12g portions as a bedtime fat fix. Otherwise, I've stuck to low fat cheese and yogurt - the extra 1g carb in the latter seems better to me than the extra calories in the full fat version. I think it is a case of tweaking things to suit what your body can handle and also giving it time to settle down. Best of luck with it.

You could still have some cheese in moderation, Edam Cheese has around 25% less fat than Cheddar Cheese.

Edam cheese is the spawn of the devil... Or like eating your Grandad's work socks. ;-)

:D........it's not something I could eat everyday admittedly but it's not too bad, my wife loves Edam on a salad and I do myself occasionally eat it, however my favourite is Blue Stilton :)

I used to eat it for school packed lunches so probably bad associations. Gouda is nicer and not much more calories or fat, I think. Blue Stilton I like stuffed in celery. Well something has to stop it being so chewy and healthy.

Can't stand celery. I once had a steak (possibly fillet) in a local restaurant when we were dining out for our anniversary, it came with Stilton cheese grilled over the top and it was delicious :)

Apologise to peacetrain about this cheese talk.

I love cheese, but have really cut back on eating it ....
3 stones lost .....nearly myself again ....another stone to go .....
I have been on half fat cheese it really is ok , for me ......a strong mature cheddar .....x

You're right. Thanks. :-)

I'm determined to not do statins. Thanks for your support.

Hey peacetrain

Do not let this worry you too much.

A temporary setback in the grand scheme of things.
I lost a similar amount of weight as you, and have a similar amount still to lose. When I first lost the weight cholesterol shot up, (can't remember the figures), even though I was and still am on statins. I know statins get such a bad press, but some of us do need them. I was found to have familial high cholesterol, though I guess being so heavy wasn't helping, even though I had always eaten low fat food. Without them I doubt I would be here now, as all my ancestors have had heart attacks in their early fifties.

I appreciate your post on this because I am considering changing from Newcastle as I am a bit bored with that now. Also, want to find a sustainable way of eating 'normal food'.

My bloods including cholesterol were all fine yesterday. I put that down to the hated statins, chick peas, and Benecol drinks. I can't stand the taste of the spread though.

Go have a stair stomp, and you will feel better tomorrow. Also be proud of what you have achieved. (Including having me as a partner in crime)
Be well
Pipp

Ha ha thanks Pipp. Please don't think I'm knocking the statins. I understand they are life savers for some. For now, I don't think they're a necessity for me. It's early days yet and I have things to tweak. I like chick peas but haven't added them to my diet yet. Will do now though. :-)

I don't really have a use for a spread and I really didn't need to add butter because I use olive oil . Iight try those benecol drinks if carbs allow and I'll put small amounts of oats back in.

I've done 20 ups and downs today.

Take care dear.
