The Diabetes epidemic

Yes but there was no mention at all of T1! It's not just all about T2! I think this gives individuals the wrong impression of ALL diabetics, which isn't the case! Yes, some Diabetics have poor diets, smoke and don't take any exercise, but we are not all in that same box!

Do you remember the fall out from a well known Diabetic Charity's poster campaign some years back, all about waist measurement and sad looking overweight poster people.

Ignoring the facts that :
Not all diabetics, either type 1 or two are overweight.
Even if they are overweight, it doesn't follow that diabetes was caused by that .
There is not just one form of diabetes.

You'd think that such a charity would know better.

I worry a tad after the media have done something like this or the Daily Wail article. There was a wonderful comment on the Daily Wail website from a mum of a diabetic child, sarcastically thanking them for ensuring that her child would continue to be stigmatised and picked on at school following their misinformation that ALL diabetics are overweight , lazy and brought it on themselves.

If, just if, there was a reasonable programme or article that raised public awareness in a good informative way, it would be such a refreshing change.
But that wouldn't be "entertainment", would it ?

most of us are though.

Hmm... I'm sure we can pull some stats that shows that the increase in number of diabetics tracks with global warming... guess that's our fault too :p
Yes, increased metformin and cauliflower consumption is killing the ozone layer :***:

Yay for silliness! It doesn't hurt so much if you are laughing so hard :)

Breaking News !!

" Our correspondent at The Daily Error" reports that massive amounts of diabetics are responsible for global warming due to their higher body temperatures as a result of being obese . Possibly , this is also due to large amounts of greenhouse gases being released as a side effect of a commonly prescribed drug, Metaformin.

Following reports in the media highlighting the burden of diabetics on the NHS, former MP the late Syril Smythe recently stated: " They are a national disgrace ! They should be ashamed of themselves, and show some restraint with their appetites ".

Ferrero Grabitt, a spokesperson for pharmaceutical company Rocher, told The Daily Error : " We have a new drug therapy in the pipeline to tackle this serious epidemic of diabetes. Our new wonderdrug, "Thinandlessflatulent" is likely to be widely prescribed for all persons over the age of eighteen "

Meanwhile, the government continues with its plans to invite diabetics to participate in the joint DWP programme plan for a greener cheaper energy source, by taking up work experience in their existing wind farms, or the soon to be opened "Human Hamster Wheel " health spas that will be situated at all wind farms"

Yay! My body temperature is lower than 'normal', so does that mean I'm exempt from blame this time?.....Oh, wait, I do take metformin, so maybe not:(

Yeah... lets do a load of paperwork and say "you are at this risk level" well that's ****.
Why not do a quick finger stick and go.. hmm.. yes that is a bit high, you should go see your Dr based on the fact this was high no instead of the **** of go and see your Dr because you are in the 1 in 33 chance risk factor.. grr... no... I turned it off for a reason. Sensationalist media ****! As usual
Exactly!

Diagnosed prediabetic Easter 2014. Just left to get on with it, no guidance or help from GP. Every day I'm learning something new.

The programme went the way of many of those which purport to be dealing with serious issues these days: it was 'dumbed-down'.

TV programmers seem to think that the great British public are incapable of taking in any information unless it's broken into the lowest possible denominators, and are convinced we've the attention span of a gnat and the memory of goldfish. This means they have to keep endlessly repeating 'key facts' (again in the simplest possible terms), and use gimmicky devices - like a gym full of cute children - to educate us in the basics - "just to make sure the thickos have got it, don't you know". It's a shame, because it usually puts people off.

At least it didn't end up all about the presenter, which so many do these days (particularly on the Beeb), but IMHO it was a great opportunity missed. I'm sure anyone here could have put together a far better presented, much more interesting and more balanced 30 mins on the subject, given half a chance.

I feel the programme suggested that diabetes can be overcome by eating properly, loosing weight etc etc. What wasn't mentioned was it will return once you start eating normally so it does not go away for good. You are always under the "diabetes umberella". I am type 2 taking insulin because tablets stopped working and not obese and dont eat ****. Have been accused by colleagues and I have given myself diabetes, yea I have ate rubbish untilI was sure I had the disease. So I this programme has just given people more amunition againt people with diabetes. It ust be right because they saw it on television!!!!! They know best.
