I have joined this forum to help me and my family deal better with my elderly mother's newly diagnosed diabetes.

I am watching her diet. Have substituted her 1tsp of sugar in her tea twice a day. Taken away her candy. :-( Now my main concern is trying to get her to actually eat as she has an upset stomach for the last two days. I've given her some anti-acid (Gaviscon) and that seems to help a little.
I appreciate the support and knowing that her blood sugar levels don't need to drop from 39 to 5 within one week (like many people are telling me).

if i get to 94 im eating as much candy as i like :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. Let us know what problems you have and someone will be able to help. The advice on here is very useful.

Actually I think the wiser move is to bring the levels down slowly since a sharp drop to normal levels is quite traumatic for the body.

I know when I was first diagnosed then release from custody, sorry I mean hospital, I felt crazy hypo when I was at 8.
Bring it down gently and make small changes, they are easier to handle than a sharp jolting change that feels like you are suddenly on a crash diet or something.

Though that is just my opinion :)

I agree.
There can be consequences for eyesight (retinopathy) if the blood glucose drops too quickly. Better to bring it down gently but firmly. ;)

Well the retinopathy is usually due to very long term high sugars.
I know that at diagnosis they were watching my salt levels like crazy since they expected them to crash.. also a few other issues that they were worried about due to previous health stuff. But my feeling is that your body has gotten used to being at a certain level so if you don't give it time to adjust it really is quite a shock to the system.

The diagnosis on its own is quite a shock so no need to make it worse with being too aggressive from a biochemical standpoint too.
