animal insulin and pump

Hi

I have funding for insulin pump but consultant not keen on using animal insulin. I am on hypurin neutral. I have tried many different types of insulin over the years but get no hypo symptoms and have lots of highs and lows. I have few hypo symptoms now so don't want to lose the few I have left. Anybody on animal insulin at all with a pump please?

Hi, I use Bovine neutral in my pump. It has exactly the same onset time and duration as pork insulin.
Any basal changes need to be made 2 hours before the change is needed and set your duration of insulin to at least 6 hours and bolus 30 mins before you eat. I've never had any problems with tubing getting blocked or insulin going off! I've been pumping for at least 7 years without any problems whilst using animal insulin.

I would suspect the consultant isn't keen because he knows nowt about it and far to lazey to get of backside and do his own research.
Perhaps ask him to contact Prof John Pickup (google him)
 
I use porcine insulin - not with a pump though.
However I have noticed with this insulin does
give me excellent hypo awareness!
Likened to a kick like a mule :wideyed:

It isnt a popular choice of insulin nowadays with the HCP's
Ended up on animal insulin as am allergic to the preservatives
with human insulin .
Been on it 5 years now and never had none or little hypo awareness
whilst on this.
It seems to have a wonderful built in hypo awareness function within itself !

My onset time with porcine insulin seems to be nearly 4 hours .
When I used levemir it did have a much quicker onset time with myself .

Thanks. It is great to see other people still on animal insulin as most drs and nurses cannot understand why I want to stay on it.

I have no idea which pump you are having, but suggest you contact John Hughes at Advanced Therapeutics who deals with the DanaR pump and Dexcom. He used to be the agent for the Cozmo pump when I started to pump and he is very knowledgeable about animal insulin in pumps has has put quite a few onto pumps. When you have made 5 post you can pm people so will do so with more info to help you.
Please accept my apologies if a reply is a bit late as I am back an fore with my parents at the moment as Dad is coming to the end of his days and needing 24/7 care.
 
I agree with what is said about animal insulin. Its much cheaper to prescribe for one thing and also is safer regsrding the awareness of hypos. Human insulin including the analogues, was meant to be safer to use because of the so called mild hypo symptoms, but in reality, it was hard initially to recognise the hypo feeling as the symptoms were different to those produced by animal. There was a big uproar about it in the UK and across Europe too. It all got smoothed over and diabetics just learned to recognise the different hypo symtoms
