Next question - I am asking a lot of these. I hope people don't mind - I really want to know and am taking all this in. It's a huge help ( My God, I typed help and the phone spelling typed **flugelhorn ** !! !!).

I see you guys talking on here in terms of a total number of grams of carb per meal (or per day), eg 25g.

I haven't seen anything else on this. Should we be aiming for A specific max grammage of carbs per meal (or day)?

Thanks, again!

LOL ! "Flugelhorn " !:D:D Now that's a word we use in every other sentence !

The short answer though, is that I guess it differs from person to person, day to day and meal to meal. The gram total for some people would spin my BG's in to orbit, whilst mine may be far too low for other's to comfortably manage. I think we just have to experiment to find our own personal level. I started higher, then gradually dropped the total per day.

Sorry, I know that's unhelpful.

Do you use the product info to work it out tho? I think more in terms of 10 cherries, or 1 spoon of quinoa ..

Hi Lucy, I agree with Heathenlass, it is a very personal thing. Just to give you an idea, I can't eat more than 25g per meal, but some people can be perfectly ok on 40g per meal or more (based on 3 meals a day). The only way you can tell is by testing your bg before and 2 hours after eating. I did the opposite to Heathenlass and started on very low carbs and gradually increased them, again we are all different and it is all trial and error to start with. The key is to test to find your own limit on how many carbs you can tolerate.

Good luck if you have any more questions please ask.

PS just read your recent post and it is garbled

You might have accidentally edited your signature in the app (explains the garbled text at the bottom!) :)

Hi Lucy, you need to read the labels on all foods, they normally give you the carbs per 100g and some give you carbs per portion, you should use the total carbs and not the with sugars. You will soon get your head round it all, it just takes a little time. Low carb foods are any type of fresh meat, fresh fish, tinned fish, eggs, bacon, 97% meat sausages, salad, berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries - in moderation), all vegetables that grow above ground, (root vegetable i.e. swede, carrots that grow below ground should be eaten in moderation).

Low carb food with high fat content, fresh double cream (in coffee) delicious, cheese, full fat yoghurts.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lucy,

Some people go cold turkey and start straight off on very low carbs, under 30g per day. Others like me took it more slowly.

I started in Feb and was limiting myself to 126 carbs a day. Although I was losing weight it wasn't working on the blood sugars, so in March I averaged 119g a day. Still not good enough so by April I averaged 96g a day. By May I was on average 75g a day. So far in June I've averaged 70g a day.. I can't see myself going any lower or I would have to up my fat even more, and/or protein, and I don't want to do that.

You do need to read all food labels, and use an app or a book to find out what carbs are in what foods as far as fresh stuff goes because there are no food labels on fresh stuff.

To begin with you need to weigh all carbs before you eat them. After a while you will get used to what the portions look like on your plate and won't need to weigh as often. If you know how much 10 cherries weigh, then 10 cherries will do and you won't need to weigh them again. You should have seen my hubby's face when I weighed out my cooked garden peas that he had just plated up for me! Now I know it's one tblsp full.

It all becomes automatic after a while.

Finding all the nutritional values of non-packaged food stuffs can be a bit of a pain to start with, but once you know what 10g, 50g or 100g of a product looks like, then you can easily work out your standard portion to keep it simple. If you just google 'nutritional value of . . . . . . . .' then it usually gives you a complete breakdown, e.g. of a chicken egg, 100g ham, 100g roasted chicken etc. etc. etc. Another site that is useful is http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/dairy-and-egg-products/111/2 you can type in any product and adjust the portion size e.g. 1 oz, 100g, 1 cup etc. etc. Basically you just have to adjust your carb intake to a level that works for you, so try something out and test, test, test, then adjust if you do not get the readings you want.

Hi Harper, just looked at your link, that will help me too. Brilliant.

Many thanks

Marilyn
