Should I be measuring my blood sugar levels?

Hi, first day on this site. I have been diagnosed as Type 2 for over four years and the only time I have the blood sugar level tested is at my annual check-up with the diabetes nurse. It is usually around the 5.4 level, which I gather is fairly healthy. I take one Metformin tablet a day and try to exercise as much as I can.
Should I be measuring my blood sugar level at regular intervals?

Is the 5.4 your fasting BG result, or your HbA1c result?
