So yesterday I was diagnosed with IBS....I asked my Doctor what I should eat and what I should avoid....and well she didn't really know! So can anyone help please???

It rather depends on which flavour of IBS you have: C or D (or both, alternating).

Grain free and generally low fibre is my advice.
Okay! Thank you! I am not actually sure what causes mine because I can eat something one time and get symptoms but then nothing when I eat it again!!

Keep a food diary.....and use trial and error in finding food that ur ok with. See if avoiding food that has malt as an ingredient. That may help.....look at the info on the pkts etc

After my daughter stopped taking Mebeverine she was put on Fibro gel.

I think that it depends on the type of fibre, soluble fibre such as in Fibro gel is good for IBS and non soluble fibre such as in bran isn't good. I am no expert it is only what I read on the net.

I don't suffer IBS but I did suffer varying side effects from Metformin, constipation some days, diarhea on others and found that a soluble fibre supplement was recommended as it helped both.

Hi Nicola Anne, yes it can be a bit hit and miss sometimes, but looking in my Dr Miriam Stoppards medical book she says :-
Avoid large meals, spicy, fried or fatty foods and milk products. Cut out or reduce your intake of tea, coffee, milk, cola and beer. Eat at regular times. Try relaxation exercises to alleviate stress. Exercise can help reduce attacks of wind. A more sensible alternative to eating bread would be to switch to rice cakes or crackers. Peppermint is worth a try. and lastly she says, A high-fibre diet or bulk forming agent, such as bran, should help .most people.
You could Google IBS and you may be able to find a forum about IBS with help, support and advice on what works for others. But remember not everyone is the same. Hope you feel better real soon. x

My daughter hated this, it forms into quite a thick gel and she really disliked the taste and texture. But she was about 10 at the time.
Thank you I will look into it! And ohh someone in work said about that but they couldn't remember the name of it! x

I don't know about Fibrogel, but I use Psyllium husks (it does have other names as well) and its available on line or from places like Holland and Barrets. I have read about people mixing it with orange juice instead of water and having it almost as a dessert. Orange juice may not be good for us, but there might be alternatives to make it more palatable, I find it has very little flavour of its own.

Supposedly being high in fibre it relieves constipation, and as it a soluble fibre it absorbs excess water in the gut so helps with diahrea (my spelling of that word changes every time, but I think you know what I mean),

As I said before the Metformin made me rather erratic, not as severely as some but enough to be annoying. When I was told to up the dose from 2 to 4 tablets a day I started to look for something to relieve the side effects before they got worse. It worked for me, and as IBS can have similar symptoms it might help.

I would suggest goggling it to find out if other IBS sufferers have found it useful.

The people I know who suffer from IBS has had enormous relief when cutting down on fibre, particularly so grain. Wholegrain seems to be the worst. The theory behind this is that IBS is an inflammatory disease and fibre irritates the colon. Might be worth a try?
