Hi my name is jane and my daughter Jodie (13 years old) was diagnosed just under 3 weeks ago with type 1 diabetes shocked (still shocked and if I am honest a little scared) and devastated
We had no warning only that she was getting thirsty over 2 weeks no other symptoms (very sporty) took her to our doctor just to have a check up and was diagnosed
Jodie is coping really well (mum not so well) got worried today as at school this morning she was feeling tired (first time) and checked her blood level which was 3.1
She had some fruit pastels (she has had low before and were ok after having 3 pastels) but only went to 3.3 so took some more pastels and also some crisps then went to 4.4
She then had a headache after having a couple of hour sleep the headache cleared but still does not feel her self over 8 hour later feeling like she has no energy
She is eating ok
I have been told this could be the weather, or too much insulin before breakfast (we are now reducing for breakfast only) or due to her honeymoon period
I would appreciate any advise/reassurance

Hi Jane

My son (15) was diagnosed as type 1 around 5 weeks ago as well. I wouldn't like to advise you on anything insulin related, but just wanted to let you kniw that I know how you feel right now!

He doesnt normally run low, but has been for the past 2 days so I'm assuming it's the heat.

Hope someone will be along soon to advise you.

Take care and try not to worry too much. X

Hi Jane,

My 9 year old daughter Holly was diagnosed 6 weeks ago. The first few weeks were really hard, there's so much to learn and I didn't sleep for the first two weeks as I was so worried. We are getting used to everything now and each week things have got easier and now testing and injections have become part of our routine.

We have yet to experience low bg levels as her levels were really high to start with. They have now come down to a normal level and we have noticed that heat and more exercise than normal have does cause quite a drop in her levels.

Just wanted to let you know that the panic and worry will get less as time goes on.

Hi I'm new to this forum and just began reading the intro page. I'm sorry to hear about all these children being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I hope everyone get themselves sorted soon and find themselves sailing along pretty normally (if that's possible) asap after that. Best wishes for all.

Hi my 15 year old was diagnosed about 10 days ago, he has adjusted really well but I am struggling with the new lows he is experiencing and as a mum wanting to give him the best start to be able to maintain his health as an adult but wanting him to enjoy his teenage years. Guess only time will tell and lots of patience and sleepless nights

We go on holiday next weekend, not overseas but we are going to the south of the country where it is predicted to be a lot hotter than we are used to (we live in the rainy Lake District). The only advice I have been given by the nurse is to check her bg levels a lot more often especially as she will be a more active than usual and to take spares of everything we may need.

There is a really good book in the JDRF pack that I was given at the hospital when Holly was first diagnosed, I think you can request a pack from their website if you don't already have one. If I need advice about anything I call Holly's nurse, she is brilliant and very reassuring.

I know exactly how you feel MrsBaldie. I am determined that diabetes will not rule Holly's life. I'm trying to do everything I can to help her maintain good control over her diabetes and educating her about it but also trying not make her feel restricted or too different to her brother and sister and friends.
