People who interrupt you when you're talking and people who won't listen.
So, today it's our annual family and friends BBQ at my parents house - and it's the first year I'll have attended since I found I was pre-diabetic. Now, I'd like to have some fun and was planning on relaxing my LCHF diet for a day. This is what I was planning:

1 bread roll (it's not a burger without a bun...no I'm sorry, it's just not LOL)
1 drink of Crabbies ginger and raspberry - not drunk alcohol since before diagnosis, and I was only a twice a year drinker before
1 slice of cake

I haven't told my family and I don't plan on doing either because their constant fussing, watching and asking "should you be eating that" will drive me nuts (anybody else's family do this?). So, somehow I need to do this without attracting attention....that's going to be interesting. Wonder if they'll notice I haven't eaten my usual 3 buns, 2 portions of dessert and 2 litres of Pepsi.

And to, you know, make it worthwhile, I've decided to use it as an opportunity to see what happens to my blood glucose...just need to figure out how to sneak in a test LOL.

Oh heck, wish me luck...

Eat what you say above, and enjoy it! Don't let your pre-diabetes control you and use it as an experiment in the name of science! Do come back with the results! It is a one-off special occasion and you can get back on the waggon tomorrow. However, the weather forecast isn't looking too great for today ........

I know! They're over in Lancaster and since we're near Leeds, I have no idea what weather they're having. I thought I'd wear shorts, a vest top, cardigan and I'll take a sou'ester just in case LOL. Last year it was torrential rain and howling winds, and I thought at the time it would be difficult to have worse weather LOL.

Will report back later...all in the name of science of course :)

I'm in Lancashire. It has been raining, but currently just grey clouds and a breeze. Still warm though, and an odd patch of blue sky.

Just had a thought about explaining to family why you aren't eating your normal portions etc. Just say you are on a weight loss diet. No need to mention the D word.

The easiest way is to say you're on an Atkins diet or whatever is close. Even the strangest things are ok if you say it's part of my diet. It's a free pass. Most would say ok and then you eat what you want.

You could say you're watching what you eat at the moment? That would be true. If questioned why, you could say you're looking to trim up a bit? Also true. After all, once the weight loss becomes apparent, if it isn't already, there will be questions anyway, and perhaps with a different sort of concern.

Like you, I'm not an announcer, and I have "formally" told very, very few people. During my big trip, I lost weight and explained it as watching my diet as I found I wasn't handling sugar and carbs too well. There was rarely as much as a raised eyebrow. Most people aren't that interested, if they're honest. Initially, I also gave up alcohol, and folks seemed to feel more uncomfortable about that, to be honest! To be fair, those people aren't family.

At home, the changes in me have been extremely evident, after periods of 4, then a further 5 months away. My tack at home has been slightly different, as I had, before diagnosis, declared I'd be trying to trim up when I was away anyway. So, that fell into place really. For those asking me now, I tell them I realised carbs weren't doing me any favours, so trimmed them back a bit, then then having lost a bit of weight, I decided I'd go skinny. That's all true, except there was a bit of an undisclosed discovery (diabetes) in the middle of it.

I must say, having sorted out some clothes that fit, I'm now getting complements, rather than enquiries. Clothing falling off the bones isn't a great look, and it makes is easy for the curious to enquire.

Sorry for the ramble, but it's a tricky one. I'd be getting my story sorted before getting there, or you'll end up befuddled and either blurt it out or appear to be hiding something sinister. "People" don't care, but family worry. Best not to set that up for them. :)

At least it seems it's not just me that's not much of an announcer LOL. I didn't even want to announce the wightloss - and maybe nobody will even notice anyway - I just don't like that kind of attention and enquiries. But as you said, at some point, people will notice. in wihich case, I guess, I just say that being 40 soon I thought I should try and behave myself. Keep it low key...you know?

@bluetit, I'm not letting the prediabtetes control me, but it does need to have some attention at the moment while I make some major lifestyle changes. Once I've got about 10% of the weight off, I'll be a bit more relaxed about it...for now, I'm hoping to drop to 10% pretty quickly. I'm currently at about 5% (just over).

Well i don't care...it's summer and I've got my legs out LOL

One thing about telling people you are diabetic (assuming that one day you will get round to it) is that people take their cues from you.

'I wasn't feeling well, so the doctor did some tests, my blood sugar was high, and I'm diabetic'
=> concern and questions

'Hey, been meaning to tell you, I've found out I do better without sugar and lots of carbs. Diabetic. Surprise, eh? It's made such a difference. I'm feeling SO MUCH better.'
=> pleased interest in your improved well being

At least that was my experience.

Good ideas thanks.

Anyway it was noticed. Said i found i was a bit addicted to bread and found i had less food cravings once i started avoiding it. It was no biggie...

I know we are all motivated in different ways, but the only way I can go on draconian diets is to put a treat in at strategic points along the way. I would not feel bad at having some naughty food at a BBQ as long as it is not habit forming;).

Remember, to put on one pound in weight is 3500 calories, so you would not set yourself back too much on the weight loss side.

I would forget you are prediabetic for a day and eat what you like and enjoy it one day of treats are not going to harm you

Well I did relax it a bit but then realised that I just wasn't enjoying the carbs like I remembered doing in the past...weird. I ended up having quite a bit of sugar though before I realised I just wasn't enjoying it. Checked my bg out of curiosity more than anything and it never went above 6.8...that I noticed. I was careful to space out the sugar and carbs to allow my bg to reduce a bit though.

6.4 this morning...surprising given the food i ate yesterday! certainly not disappointed but definitely going to continue LCHF diet as it's giving me consistent weight reduction at this stage.
