This may be well known already, but thought I'd share - today I went to see my endo - and, amongst other things, we discussed that I would like to have a baby in the not too distant future... anyway - he advised that Levemir was the preferable basal - alongside Novorapid for my bolus - which was re-assuring as those are the insulins I switched to around a month ago...

I came home and read a little more - and this article suggests that ideally we should aim to be on Levemir prior to conception. Having said that, I do know lots of people have very healthy babies on Lantus - so just sharing really :-)

“This is the most thrilling news since the discovery of insulin,” says - a complete idiot quoted in this article.

The article makes no distinction between Humalog and Novorapid for bolus use in pregnancy.

It incorrectly assumes that Lantus can't be used twice daily, and can't be used to create peaks. It can.

Still it is a fair point to fear that antibody-bound Lantus would cross the placenta. I am surprised this happens with bound molecules as opposed to unbound antibodies but I guess there is evidence for that?

This Dr Jojovich sounds kind of over the top to me. Inject basal overnight on a pump in case a set failure gives the baby DKA? Is that realistic? Do the mum's ketone bodies cross the placenta? I suppose the acid blood would cross the placenta but is it realistic to go into DKA in 8 hours?

It's amusing that they claim Levemir is good because it has a non-flat profile. Change of tune there from NovoNordisk! :-)

The article reads like a Novo advertisement to me. :-/

Hee hee... I know you like your hard facts @Spiker - I just liked that it seemed to correlate with what my endo and prof I see had said... plus I found it reassuring so thought other mama's-to-be might too :-)

As for Dr. J... I suspect her over-the-top-ness may just be her American-ism... ;-) I don't know a lot about her - but she does seem to specialise in t1 and pregnancy - I found this about her history which I thought was kinda cute - I think she has more than a monetary / advertising interest - but I could just be easily let by sweet stories... :-)

Heh heh yeah I do like the facts. :-)

It is good news for pregnancy that they can use Levemir with greater confidence.

I couldn't be bothered to read the article after reading the comments but thought I'd throw my two penneth in. I was advised the same thing by my consultant when planning pregnancy. Levemir is best. Also had to stop taking some of my kidney and BP pills beforehand and all the way through as they contain some kind of growth hormone that would not be good for a growing foetus
