Just had my 1st 3 month check up and the results are in. My hba1c at diagnosis was 85 today's result is 43, I've lost 30lbs and am now within the healthy bmi band 12 st 12 lb 6ft2" and I've lost 4" off my waist measurement. Also got my eye screening result back which unfortunately does show a little bit if background retinopathy but nothing to worry about. I've done this by diet alone and my diabetic nurse seems happy to say the least. I've broached the subject of test strips and she says seeing as I'm using my strips in a positive way there is no reason why she should stop my prescription. :-)

Brilliant Mat, well done, that's an impressive drop into prediabetic HbA1c territory!

Hello, fantastic news which diet have you been following?

Yes well done Mat, hope you continue with your progress.

I've been told by my sister that I also have to point out that exercise has played a big part in these results I now swim 2-3 times a week for an hour and cycle approx 70 miles a week. Thanks for all your nice comment I'm sure I couldn't have done it without the information shared on this site. I think you could consider yourselves literally life saves.

Oh and as for diet I keep my daily carb intake to under 150g mostly under 100 and tend to have no more 1900 calories intake a day.

Very well done. Reasons to be cheerful indeed!

You have made fantastic progress and it must feel great to see your hard work and discipline rewarded.

My only word of warning is not to let take your eye of the ball. Sometimes when we manage to reach a target we have been working hard for, we unwittingly relax, complacency sneaks in and bad habits start crawling back.

I know it happened to me so don't let it happen to you.

Congratulations and keep up the hard work!

Pavlos

I had been wondering what would be recommended as a daily amount. I've been looking for foods that are under 10g in 100g but never found anything that mentioned when to stop. Is 150g the recommended figure?

Congratulations on your success so far Mat, keep up the good work :)

There isn't one.
Eat to your meter, avoid foods that spike you, decide what sort of mix of foods you want, portion control, or count calories if you need to, and take it from there.

Why 10g in 100g by the way?

Surely that depends on what the food is, and how it affects you?

I'd try to avoid say white sugar, if that made up the 10g, but wouldn't avoid soya flour for example, which is 30g.

I would say 150g was a nice level for me - when I was around this I was able to lose weight. Since increasing to 250g I can no longer lose weight (not gaining either btw) and I crave food more than I was. There is no ideal amount it is all personal preference.

Hmmm I've seen it mentioned on here a few times to look for foods that are under 10g in 100g. My next step is to get a meter then, I'm hanging on till my next appointment with the nurse to see if she's likely to prescribe me one. I think I'll ring her instead so I can get myself one if she's not willing.
Thanks for replying.

Yep its all a matter of testing and find what works for you. Using myfitnesspal I can alter the levels of fat carbs and protein to get to a calorie intake that works for me. I'm now going to try and stabilise my weight without increased carbs so upping the % fat a bit will hopefully level me off

That would rule out a lot of food.
You also have to consider how much of it you eat, and how fast you digest it.

You'll get a worse hit if you eat 500g of food with 50g of sugar, than you will from 100g of a food with 30g of carbs (like soya flour)

Well just had my second checkup with DN and got my 2nd set of hba1c results and I'M IN REMISSION........ 37.0 mmol/mol. Happy? You bet.....

Oh well done and congratulations. That is a fantastic result and all without meds. You should be dancing round the room. :)

Keep up the good work though - don't spoil this. Diabetes doesn't go away.

No fear of that I'm in this for the long haul. Thanks for your kind words
