Im having trouble understanding my levels. They are really high at about 14 first thing in the morning prior to breakfast ! And this morning 30 minutes after having my breakfast it was 20.3. This is the highest I have ever been. Anyone else have this trouble? Thanks

Hello Bobbyboost and welcome.

Did you test again at 2 hours after your meal? That is the best time to test initially, until you get your head round it all.
What did you have to eat and drink?

Morning levels are always the last to come down- are you on meds? What do you eat? It's obviously a high jump from waking to post food so I would suspect it's something you ate at breakfast? The guidleines tell us no more than rise of 2 after a meal is acceptable
I'm 18 weeks into my journey - others on here will be along to give advice too as it's a brilliant, informative and supportive group here!! Keep posting your questions and progress!

I dont think I will ever get my head around it especialy why my levels are so high when I get up in the morning ! I take Metformin and Stigitin(think thats how it is spelt) I had a skinny latte and a granola bar for breakfast (never had one before) so maybe I should avoid them in future. Im 50 and do need to lose some weight so well done on the 3st 3lb and thanks for the responses.

I'm sure you will eventually, it is certainly confusing to start-up I felt the same when diagnose and can honestly say I would not have the knowledge, passion and enthusiasm as I do now if I had not joined this group of lovely folk and became so proactive!
Granola may well one to be on your list of things to avoid- skinny latte too, skimmed milk is higher carb than full fat milk, crazy hey?? !! Coffee with double cream would be just as indulgent but carb free!!

The skinny latte won't have done you many favours either, especially at the 30 minute time. Milk is full of sugar (lactose), and skinny milk has more than whole milk. Also, caffeine can raise levels in some people. If you love your coffee, try it with cream rather than milk. The granola bar will also have had a lot of carbs in it, and as we understand all too well, carbs convert to glucose once inside the system.

Oh dear, I have a skinny latte everyday thinking I was being good ! I really need to get to grips with this! Thanks again for the advice

It is very hard to learn which foods we can cope with and which we can't, but using our meters to test before we eat and 2 hours after our first bite will tell us what that meal has done to our BS levels. Then we must learn from that. Try keeping a food diary including portions, then record your before and after levels alongside. You will soon see patterns emerging.
