Exercise and type 1

I cycle to work and back everyday - at least 15km each way and I go to the gym 5 days a week.
Before cycling to work.... Id test. If I was within normal readings Id have a bowl of oats then cycle to work. At work test and if Im over 7, Id have a small dose of insulin.
I have the new Libre so I can check my blood anytime without pricking. I alway have a few sips of lucozade before my cycle home and then when doing excercise in general..... i always have a bottle of lucozade with me.

Yes i am a regular gym goer and runner n i find this the same due to days of exercise n days inbetween, trying to get the insulin balance is hard im on novo rapid n lantus but my nurse has said the levemir is better for n makes more a difference with people who exercise.
My cyclist friend was on levemir and it seemed to work for him!

I exercise 6 times a week, high intensity weight sessions in the gym or road running and have found it to be a major asset to controlling my diabetes! I'm 21, diagnosed 18 months ago. If I didn't exercise as much as I do, I would probably be taking 10x the amount of insulin. But because of my exercise regime I am on a extremely little background insulin of just 2 units a day (only once in the morning) and the maximum of 5 units novarapid with meals and I don't follow a low carb diet. When I was diagnosed my DSN was adamant that I didn't stop or let the diabetes hinder my training. The meal before exercising I reduce my novarapid by 20-40% and take water with glucose powder in it (you can buy if from holland and Barrett) and just sip on it. But personally I prefer to reduce my insulin beforehand than have to 'top' my sugar levels up throughout exercise as sometimes a sweet drink like lucozade makes me feel sick. So yes my advice is get back on the pitch!! :) for the first few times test in the middle of exercise to see which types of exercise affects your BG levels, correspond with your DSN then you guys can figure out how much you need to reduce your basal/bolus before and after exercise. Weight training increases my BG levels but running obviously lowers it. I can't recommend exercise enough to type 1s, it has helped with my management massively and I have a hb1ac of just 5 :) good luck!

After a long run or ride I have to be very careful to manage doses and maybe eat a bit extra on the carbs, depending on training intent., otherwise I can end up crashing about 2-3 hours later as the muscles and liver replenish glycogen stocks.

Funny you say that, I'm on 5-6 sessions a week and on the pump I'm on <5U a day basal, and about 3-5U a day bolus. I attribute that entirely to the exercising.

Your the first person I've seen who is also on such little amounts of insulin! I have to throw away so much insulin at the end of the month because I use to little, it looks so wasteful compared to my brother who goes through almost 2 cartridges a month despite also doing a lot of exercise. Hope you're getting on well with your pump :) I will hopefully be getting mine soon

Hi pg1795 I have started doing intensity training at the gym and have gone from taking around 100 units a day to taking only my basal which is 20 units through out the day on insulin pump and now my blood sugar have not even jumped above 7 for the last 2 week and now I am not having to take insulin for meals either I spoken to my DSN today and they said it quiet rare to have effects like I have in such a short time I eat every 2 hours just small meals of chicken and rice or chicken and veg and scrambled egg on toast and porridge and I have only been diagnosed a year type 1
