Could someone tell me if a reading of 10.2 before breakfast is a really high reading before breakfast ? My Nurse gave me a meter yesterday, and I've just had a shock ! Are these individual readings taken at home to be understood as the same results my diabetic nurse gives me every 6/12 months. I have been to the Emergency eye hospital over the weekend due to a 'leak in the back of my eye, they have made me an apt for end of November to see an eye Consultant specialising in Diabetes related conditions.
I have to admit I HAD been eating everything in site until last weekend, but I am completely on track eating wise now , so this reading seems really high. I am on 2x850mg Metformin morning and evening. and 5mg of Amlodopin a day.I am really worried about losing my sight !! Any advice about my blood reading would be gratefully received. it's much higher that I thought it would be .
thanks kazz

It's not really that bad ..... tad high I admit (I've seen a LOT higher) but you should let us know what you ate over the weekend that could have resulted in that reading.

Hi , I believe one single reading of 10.2 at a given time really does mean too much. Better you should know what is your HbA1c (the recent one) .Also I suggest you take proper care of eye treatment

Hi Mike, this shows how ignorant I am on blood Glucose (I'm not saying that flippantly ) I assumed that the reading was about what I'd eaten in the last few hours ?
Yesterday I had porridge for breakfast (a really tiny bowl) full fat yog with a teaspoon of Hazelnut spread stirred in,, and then nothing until eve as I was at the Eye Hosp. For dinner at 8 pm, I had a chicken breast in breadcrumbs and 2 tbsp. of peas (that was just for quickness as I was starving by then .
Is that any help ? Do you think I should go back to my nurse sooner rather than later ? I am worried about doing more damage to my eyes before I see the Consultant

My latest HbA1c was 8.5 which my nurse said was too high but I asked her if she would agree to let me try to get this down by sensible eating, she is going to see me in 3 weeks. I am wondering if that was a silly thing to do. I am so careful with caring for my eyes and go for all possible chacks , this is a real wake up call if it is related to my eating and my blood pressure though

The breadcrumbs would not have helped at all IMO and the hazelnut spread I'd question as well.

Yes the reading you take post 2 hours following a meal (as well as one hour post) give you the clues you need regarding your blood sugar levels.

B4 we go any further, the community here would need to know your age, weight, diagnosis date to provide you some more clues, but on what you've said thus far, it's a little difficult to offer anything more ... but as I said, 10.2 is something to be addressed and the concerns you have regarding your eyesight could only be properly addressed by those qualified to comment.

Good luck Mike :)

Ok, thanks for your comments Mike, I'll try to fit those into my profile later , just off to work now,

In such case please include in your routine 30 min of walking/exercise . This will help . I am a person who really can not compromise too much with diet ,that is why doing 30 min walk as a must everyday and I am noticing improvement in my readings.

Good. Please do :)

There's a LOT of people here far more experienced that I in offering advice. At least you have come to the right place and you'll soon be swamped with messages of support.

Have a good day Mike

Thank you Kath . I will do anything to improve mine , this is like a wake up call

Good morning Kazzers, I think the only way that you will be able to see what foods effect your blood sugars is to test before eating and 2 hours later, the reading should be similar if the food hasn't spiked your blood sugars. I take 50mg of Sitagliptin and over the years I have learnt was does and doesn't effect my BS. I do have a leakage like you do at the back of my left eye. this started over 2 years ago, I have regular check ups at the hospital ,however so far I have not received ant treatment. I would ask to speak to the nurse and ask all of the questions that you want answering, maybe write them down before you go. Good luck.:)
