Hi,

Been reading up on the importance of a bed time snack, explains my sweats and tiredness in the morning plus a 'out of bed' reading of 11.0 pointed me to this research. A friend of mine does a lot of gym work and he suggested the following as a high protein snack, he uses it for muscle recovery, anyone tried anything similar and would it be safe for a type 2 diabetic to try ?

It contains 22g of protein per 30g serving;

is a good choice of protein to use before bed as a high anti catabolic protein slowly released into the system as we sleep at night.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Steve

There are probably worse options. The nutritional information, although based on strawberry flavour is as follows:

Personally, when I eat (or drink), I prefer to stick with mainstream foods where I can, so I wouldn't use this, but then, I haven't found I need anything at bedtime. I might go for a few nuts or a Babybel cheese, if I wanted to snack.

Curiously, what are your bloods when you go to bed, and what do they run at during the day/evening?

I agree a few nuts some cheese or a stick of celery with peanut butter are good snacks. High protein drinks are mostly used by people who work out a lot or do body building and weight lifting

Thanks for the replies everyone, will go with the Cheese,nuts or peanut butter options then. Dont get the sweats every night but getting more common - mind i havent been out exercising (couch to 5k) recently ( my mom passed away a couple of weeks back, so havent/ couldnt be bothered recently), but will get back out next week, so thats probably got a bearing on all this.

My bloods normally run around 6 - 6.4 during the day, so getting there. High today - forgot to take my metformin this morning - Doooh

Forgetting Metformin once isn't likely to impact on your blood scores much, as it works cumulatively; building up or tapering down over a few weeks.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum. That sort of thing knocks everything for six, and takes out focus away; quite naturally, in my view, so don't be too harsh on yourself..

I'd guess you may be having a bit of a bodily back-lash from your bereavement. It's an incredibly stressful time, and we're likely to be less careful with diet and exercise at times like you're experiencing now - all of which can contribute to numbers creeping up. Just try to get through a day at a time, with better food choices and trying to exercise when you can. The emotional side takes a bit longer to settle.
