sorry if this sounds like a silly question .... But im very confused ....

I'm new to low carbing and trying to bring glucose levels down and lose about 3 stone. I notice that many low carb recipes include coconut oil, cream, butter .... Mmmmmm I would love to enjoy all of these but not sure if I should because I'm already overweight, if that makes sense?!?

Hi Rose

No problem, you can eat all of those and still lose weight because you don't have the worthless calories from all the carbs any more. I've lost 20 kg since March doing this. Eating fat doesn't make you fat. And because fat is more filling than carbs your body tells you when you've had enough.

Wow! Congrats on a fantastic weight loss :)

Thanks for clearing up the confusion. today, I'll search low carb recipes and then go shopping and fill the trolley with foods that'll change my life forever!!!

As fats are high in calories you do not need to eat a big volume of them to get the energy you need.

At least at the beginning I would be careful to bulk up my meals with more salad, green veg so that your stomach receives the same volume of food it is used to in order to feel full.

Also keep an eye on calories as well, at least at the beginning. Most people find that they lose weight on LCHF without trucking calories, as long as they limit their carbs but a few have complained that going LCHF has failed to reduce their weight; presumably because they were taking in too many calories.

I do not know if you have to limit carbs low enough to enter ketosis ( a process by which our bodies release energy by breaking down fatty acids instead of sugar) for LCHF to be effective for weight loss or whether it still works if you restrict by a lesser amount.

Good luck with your efforts

people will disagree with me but i lost a ton of weight stuffing myself with as much fat as i liked, and i never counted a single calorie, its very cool although it can be hard to accept after all the years of being told fat is bad, as long as your cutting those nasty carbs, enjoy fat!

(just my experience and opinion of course)

I calorie count and carb count mainly because I knew eating unlimited anything was a recipe for disaster for me. I had a huge appetite no doubt fuelled by the hunger carbs always gave me, but needing to lose a large amount of weight as well as reducing carbs meant I felt best calorie counting high fat foods like cheese. I do as suggested above and fill plate with green veg and cauli and have salad with lunch and a mound of mushrooms for breakfast. Tbh my portion sizes have decreased substantially as a result of low carbing and Metformin.

i have bacon and eggs in the morning but no toast bummer, a cheese snack with salad for lunch and a meat and veggie dinner no potatoes a glass of red wine or light beer works for me, i do miss all those sweets for afters no pastry or grains ps i do cheat on rare occasions but sure we all do

I have lost four and a half stone in 11 months since LCHF ... I swapped all my low fat foods with high or normal fat foods. .. All my bloods are now normal .. I eat to my meter, so keep my BS level and have more energey that ever.
I think I read somewhere here that eating fat reduces stored fat.. Well it worked for me :angelic:
