Hi. I have asked for help before but never managed to actually stick to any changes. We are going through such a lot with my son being diagnosed with autism and now being told by my doctor I may have MS or virsl labyrinthitus (long story- i have dizziness, pins and needles down my left side, extreme tiredness, difficulty swallowing etc) I simply have lost control of my diabetes. I take 24 lantus at night and 8 morning. I carb count and take 1 unit for 10g carbs. (Novorapid) but my sugar levels are all over the place. I speak to my diabetes team who give me 'fixes' such as adjusting lantus etc but I know its because I eat **** things but found low carb high fat really hard to stick to. I had a curry, naan, rice and poppadoms etc last night and forgot to take my novo. Cue levels of 24 which I got down to 15.8 by taking 10 units. My lantus is correct as they were 15.8 when I woke this morning. I have taken 8 units and not drank or ate anything to try to see them go down. In one hour they are 11.9. Last week suddenly my levels went from 10 to 4.1 even though I had eaten and took fast acting four hours prior to this. Diabetes team thought my lantus should go down so it has. I am not really sure what I am asking for but im very aware this is my **** control and I an willing to make whatever changes needed. So, any advice will be greatly appreciated and im sorry for the epic post and negative vibe.

Morning, so sorry to hear of your problems as stress and worry can make blood rise, especially when it's your child as well:(. Also you said you are eating '**** food' well that's probably the reason why your BS is all over the place. A good thing is to write down all your food intake for a few days and then read through it carefully as you can then see it all in black and white. Making a few small adjustments to start off with by eating some ( if you are not allergic to) nuts, seeded bars, more veg, meat, cheese, dairy, fruits like raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries ( I buy a frozen tub of these from the supermarket) ,I love all these anyway and by lowering the carb intake, you should see a difference in your readings. Many members have adjusted their diet and have had good results which suit's their individual needs. I hope you can find something that helps you,as sometimes other more 'important' things come first and can take over and the forum is a great place for help, advice and support. Do you have close family members or trusted friends who could have your son for a few hours, just to give you a little break ?

Good luck and take care :)

RRB x

Yes I think that is great advice. Thank you so much. My levels have been 9.8 for most of the day and I have eaten eggs, bacon, tuna and pickled onions. Not too exciting but just want them steady. Will try to bring them down after tea. .

Ps my mum did have my little boy today for an hour.. was nice to think! Just a very rare treat.

I know how grim it can feel to have your blood sugar out of control like this. You've made a start to improve things a lot, so well done! Follow @Robinredbreast's advice in making a few small changes at a time, and keep reminding yourself that it's something good that you can do for yourself.

Hi liz x I have started to keep a food diary and am testing lots. Currently got 7.8 pre bed which is astounding for me. I took fast acting at 9pm..im terrified of going low. Fingers crossed I will be ok!! Thank you I hate having erratic sugars but I feel better for writing it down as I can see how haywire it really is and how much of it is just ny control needing to be tightened

Tested at 1am: 7.8 just woke up & they are 10. They haven't moved any other day! So strange.

Hi, are you trying weight and portion control, I know that this has made a huge diff' to my readings as before I was just guessing how much I had eaten now I know and no more wild swings to my big readings , now averaging 5.5 fasting and 6.5 post meal, your heading the right way , we're all learning here, keep up the good work and you will benefit!

I need to portion control massively I am a bit random with it. I dont weigh things that much.. cous cous for example! Thanks.

It's a bore I know but when you see the results and feel so much better ,you will be happy with the results ,ps,I have lost 33 lbs now since doing proper portion control, that's over the last 9 months! My doc' said" whatever your doing keep on its having a good effect on all your readings !"

Here I go again.
I weigh 0 food.
Inputs and outputs
I hasten to add this is an example:
Input was
1. Blood reading 8 mmol/litre
2. dinner of say salmon, 2 potatoes and veg
3. insulin 14 units
Output (after hour dinner +2)
4. Blood reading 10 mmol/litre

Result (next time I have salmon add 1 unit and repeat).
That's not to say that I have Salmon every night far from it, but that is how I manage my Diabetes..
I was told when diagnosed back in the dark ages (1 potatoe the size of a hens egg = 10grammes of Carbohydrate, 1 slice of hovis bread = 10 grammes, etc.)
