What is the average amount of carbohydrates a diabetic male should take?

Its impossible to answer this question without further details and even then its not a simple one size fits all situation.

Are you talking about T1 or T2, medications, diet used , etc just try and give as many details as you can and the experts here will supply their excellent answers.

He is T2 and takes medformine and he is 61 years

Oi, we are not Ex Spurts!

Definitely not an expert either, but I'd aim for the amount of carbohydrate that does not spike his blood sugar by more than 2mmol/L when tested two hours after eating a meal. So if he doesn't already have a glucose meter get him one so he can do these checks!

How many carbs actually required will depend on the individual, what else they have eaten (e.g. fats), and any medications taken, etc. Unfortunately there is no "one size fits all", so it's really a matter individual trial and error as our diabetic bodies are all different, and can react differently to the same foods. Just start off by completely avoiding all the obvious starchy and sugary foods, and test for the rest, by eating in moderation those that contain carbohydrates in smaller quantities. Then avoid those that regularly cause higher spikes.

NICE recommended ranges are:
For people with diabetes, blood sugar level targets are as follows:
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/L for people with type 1 or type 2
  • After meals: under 9 mmol/L for people with type 1 and 8.5mmol/L for people with type 2
Aim for these, and when (or if) he achieves them, if possible try to improve on them.

Hi Barbara. There are a lot of different opinions on exactly "how low is low", and what works does vary to some extent from one person to the next. However, let me go out on a limb and suggest some specific numbers. I personally think that a good LCHF starting point is to cut your carbs to around 10 to 20 percent of your total daily calories.

To calculate this in grams just divide the Calories by 4. So if for example you're eating 2000 Cals, then 10% is 200 Cals which corresponds to 50g of carbs. Id try 10 to 20 percent as a starting point.
