No. You should not use your thumb or forefinger. You should have been told this by you H.C.P. the reason is that you use these fingers for most things and you could damage the nerves and loose feeling in them. This could cause you problems with dexterity. And of course, feeling things.A first for me used my thumb to do a test and I think it actually felt better than using my fingers.

I feel for you. I currently have nerve damage in my right hand caused by a tumour(now gone) pressing on nerves in my neck.Have to Nuthead, broken smashed up wrist and complications set in, on going treatment, so have to make the best of what I've got and can use.
