My hb1ac has gone up slightly from 48 to 50 over the past 3 monthes is that something to be concerned about?

I am new to it all, only been diagnosed just under a year. So thought I would ask.

I aren't taking any meds either which I hope to avoid for a while

Basically trying to eat a balanced diet. I no longer eat anything with any sugar in it, such as cakes etc

I have lost a load of weight but I was only 12st 10lbs to start with so now about 10st 3lbs. I want to try and put some weight back on

Yeah I have my own meter, i don't test as often as i should I guess mostly on a morning.

I would find it hard to go low carb

That's a good start. That's what I did for a few months and it lowered my HbA1c a little. Then I got a blood glucose meter and I could see what the carbs in a balanced diet did to my blood sugar levels. I switched to a low carb high fat diet and I'll find out Friday what it's done to my HbA1c. However, based on my self testing, severely reducing carbs has dramatically lowered my blood sugar levels.

cause i like to eat pasta, bread and porridge for starters

Although everything on that list I do eat.....

If i cut out carbs I would loose even more weight

Fair enough, but it might be worth trying a LCHF diet to get your blood glucose levels down. Not everyone loses massive amounts of weight on a LCHF diet. You could try reducing your carbs, without going super low. If you test your levels after meals you may find you will want to reduce your carbs just to avoid high blood sugar spikes.

It is a constant battle and there seems to be a hell of a lot of information to sift through.

What would be really good is someone wrote a simple weekly menu that could be used.

Its hard to get all the calories you need without carbs

Providing you get the right balance between carbs, fat and protein, you should be able to maintain your current weight or even put some on, but it will mean increasing your fat and/or protein consumption to make up for the lost calories. Eat plenty of butter, olive oil, cheese, meat, oily fish, cream, eggs, and bacon to bump up those calories.

It sounds to me like you know exactly what low carb is, and which foods are the culprits in raising blood sugars. But if you continue to eat too many carbs such as pasta I'm afraid your next HbA1c may well have increased again. The choice is yours.

Use your meter. Test before eating and 1hr, 2hrs and 3hrs after your first bite. This will show you what your meals are doing to your levels. If you keep a food diary, including portions, then record your levels next to the food, you will soon see a pattern emerging, and will be able to cut down your carb portions until the after meal spike reduces. try to keep the 2hr reading under 2mmol/l, preferably lower, if you can.

I consider myself reduced carbs rather than low carb as like you I really enjoy pasta, rice, bread and potatoes, I have learnt to use my meter to control my portion size to make sure I don't raise my BS too much, and to check whether there are any odd results (as I have mentioned on previous threads, tagliettelli I can eat, penne send me high, normal bread in small slices is fine, tiger is a no no). Cheese sauces rather than tomato, melted cheese topping, fried rather than boiled rice, full fat butter instead of low fat spread and plenty of meat and veg can all help you feel full even though the carbs in the meal are reduced.

Using my meter as a guide it is surprising what I can still manage, just try and stay below a 2 point peak reading.

This simply isn't true. There are many bodybuilders out there who "cut" very successfully eating an LCHF diet. They maintain 2000-3000 cals per day simply by eating more fats. GIven that 1g of Fat has 9 calories to 1g of carbs only having 4, it's extremely easy to eat enough calories!

I guess you are all correct, I just find it hard that is all.

Knowing which fats are safe to eat.
