Avoidance

Pavlovsdogs, Alison...Clinical depression is VERY common in diabetics, managing such an illness can drive anyone to despair...depression can aggravate diabetes and vice versa. I was put on SSRIs during my initial diagnosis as I felt drained. No doubt an initial HbA1c of 112 mmol/l contributed to tiredness and mental fog but they did help and wouldn't dispense with my happy tabs. My DSN does a depression checklist with me every 6 months and am glad she isn't missing mental health issues which are just as important as all the physical stuff as well. Not even a teeny weeny bit embarrassed admitting this because it's my health that's at stake lol

I am currently on antidepressants and skipped a day as I was feeling tip top, but I think due to that and my diet and the realisation that I have to gain control and 're-think things is hard, I also think my diet has a huge affect on my moods too, does anyone else believe that? x

I've been on anti depressants for two years now. They have helped but not to the extent I had hoped. I'm due for a review so I might ask to reduce them, and see how I get on with that. @eddie1968 it's very refreshing to hear you are open about your health.

@Alison louise please don't skip your anti depressants, especially now when you are feeling vulnerable - there's plenty time to sort out your meds.

Missing a day's dose is ok, don't worry about that the amount you need is in your system for a while which is why antidepressants take two weeks to kick in. Well they do say you are what you eat and if I was eating takeaway most nights and eating ready meals a lot I'd feel like **** lol

...and I definitely think food affects mood. Have a look at the Mind info on Food and Mood project, it's very interesting.

Pavlovsdog, In 2009 I had a ruptured bowel, had septicemia and gangrene in my colon. Half was removed and ended up with a colostomy for 3 years which was very hard to manage. Had the colostomy reversed, felt things were on the up and up. In 2012 I had Acute Respiratory Failure, was in the Intesive Care Unit for a month. I was in an induced coma and woke up with a tracheotomy. I spent 8 weeks in Acute wards, had the tracheotomy removed and spent 10 months recovering. Clinical depression is worse, take that from me. Well I've nearly died twice and now totally appreciate every morning I wake up...I must be made of steel lol

Definately Alison, I repeat what Pavlovsdogs said, not a good idea to skip meds...

I get that every time I see someone in the NHS. In Out Patients Clinics I knew I was next when my records were going through to the doctor, they practically needed a pallet and a forklift lol. On a positive note I learned that worrying about anything is pointless since I used to be a bit nervous in my youth. I think all of this has made me a better person and sleep easy at night. Best feeling on dicharge from lengthy hospital stays was being back in my own comfy king size bed...I'm easy pleased and people forget the simple things too much nowadays lol

Good that you can take the positive from your experience. It's true the simplest things can make us feel a whole lot better.

Hello all, back again after a few months away, I am back because I need some help! Since my diagnosis in March I followed everything to the letter in fact a little OCD with it, for the past month however I have gone totally the other way, I have stopped taking my metformin and eating appallingly. I now feel horrid, have a terrible tummy ache and my bowels are not good either. Is this normal to have a blip, I feel horrid. Xx
Alison it is up to you but feel free to update us on your progress. No pressure

Inno...thought about her yesterday...btw Pavlovsdogs I have been upped to "Senior" now , do you get to retire and get a bus pass and tartan trolley with this status...lol

Hi Alison, I think being out of control where food is concerned will have a big effect on your mood. The guilt will keep you trapped in a spiral of dispair. So start by making one positive change..... And suddenly you will find the strength and will power to make the changes that you need to make to feel better. For me that was buying a metre and testing before and after my meals... You may already do this, but for me it was such an eye opener I've not looked back. I still have bad days, low days and sod it days but I still test before and after my meals even when I am bad... That way I can't fool myself into believing it's okay... The meter doesn't lie well not often anyway.
Good luck... I know you'll get there and we are all here to support you if you need us to.

If you're up to it Alison, how's you been, hopefully better and more positive?
