Hi! I just moved to the UK, i live in Coventry and i have type 1 diabetes and i am taking daily insulin, novorapid penfill and lantus prefilled pens.
I have a question for those who live in Coventry and could help me..my question is that how can I get insulin reciept here in the uk? Where do I need to go to register or what i need to do to get insulin?
And if somebody can tell me what benefits are having the people who have diabetes in the uk? Like if you can get a free buspass or something else, including medications.
Many thanks!

Hello and welcome :)
I'm nowhere near Coventry, but the advice is the same anywhere in the UK . Register with a doctor to obtain your prescription and diabetes care . I'm not sure if you are a permanent resident or just visiting? If you are a permanent resident your prescriptions should be free, but you will need a medical exemption certificate, again, the form for this is available from your doctor and you will need to pay until you receive the certificate, though you can claim this back within a certain time period .

I have no idea about bus passes, but I doubt you are entitled unless you have another reason besides diabetes, for example you are a pensioner or have a long term mobility issue. I could be wrong though ! It seems different areas have different criteria .

The only way you will get insulin is to register at a GP practice. Depending why you are in the UK and where you have come from would I suspect have a bearing as to what benefits you can get from our NHS. I'm curious to know though why you think at the age of 21 you should get a free bus pass? Only OAP's and people with disabilities are entitled to a free bus pass.

Well i moved to the uk with my parents, we will stay here for longer term, thanks for the given answers :)

I was asking about the buspass because in my country i had benefits like a free buspass monthly, i recived money from the government, 6 free long travel bus tickets around the country per year, food benefits, discounts on council taxes and for the rents :)
Anyway many thanks for everyone,i am going to register to a gp and i hope that i will sort out things! Happy new year to everyone!

You are welcome :)

It's different in the UK , as I'm sure you will find out ;) Where have you come from ?

The usual place to find out what you may be entitled to ( if anything !) is the Citizens Advice Bureux ( correct spelling, anyone ? )

By and large diabetes on its own in adults is not really viewed as a disability, only if there are other factors involved are benefits considered such as complications that cause lack of function for example. .

I hope you settle in OK, and a happy New Year to you too :)
